Description
Launched in September 1982, the Mini Mayfair replaced the former top model Mini 1000 HLE. The Mayfair was much better equipped than the basic model and virtually offered a luxury interior. In October 1984, the Mini received 12-inch wheel rims and one year later, the instrument cluster positioned in the centre that was characteristic of the Mini was replaced by a two-part cluster positioned directly in the driver's field of view. Under the bonnet, the car was powered by a 998cc A-series four-cylinder engine, producing modest power but delivering enough punch for urban use. With a four-speed manual gearbox, the Mayfair was never about outright speed, but its lightweight construction and sharp steering made it lively and fun to drive, particularly around corners where it displayed legendary Mini agility. Despite its small size, clever packaging meant four passengers could squeeze inside, and folding rear seats offered a degree of practicality.
This cream-coloured example has had some very light enhancement, most clearly the wider arches which give the Mini a purposeful stance, evocative of later performance models and racier variations. The exterior presents well but could do with some cosmetic improvements to certain areas to bring the car back to its former glory, something which will not be difficult to accomplish with the myriad Mini specialists around the country. The interior is in good condition, especially the leatherette seats and headlining, however no stereo is supplied with the car. With a mere 17,439 miles on the clock - believed to be warranted - the car has clearly been used sparingly by its previous owners. Its current owner took possession of the car earlier this year, but with a young family and lack of use realised that the car needed a new custodian. Consigned by Charlie McCreery
