There are collectors who will tell you this. If you want a water cooled 911, you want the 4S. Preferably as a Cabriolet. And they almost always add one more thing. It has the best rear end of the entire water cooled era. That already says quite a lot.

After the enormous success of the 993, Porsche faced a difficult task in the late 1990s. The successor had to be more modern, faster, and more efficient. That is how the 996 arrived in 1997. For the first time water cooled. For the first time truly different. Purists raised their eyebrows. The headlight design became a regular topic of conversation. It took time to get used to it. That is simply part of the story.

Time, however, has a way of reshaping opinions. Today enthusiasts see the 996 differently, especially the post 2002 models. The headlights were revised, the front bumper gained sharper lines, and suddenly there stood a mature 911. No debate required. Just a serious sports car with its own identity. Then Porsche introduced the Carrera 4S.

In 2002 Porsche decided to do something special. They took the wide body shell of the Turbo, added the Turbo braking system, and adopted the Turbo suspension, but left the turbochargers out. Naturally aspirated. The 3.6 liter flat six produced 320 horsepower and sprinted to sixty miles per hour in roughly five seconds. Combined with all wheel drive, it delivers confidence even on wet pavement. The result is a Porsche that is fast, but more importantly usable. Every single day.

The example offered here is exactly how you would want one specified. A 2003 model year car delivered new in Vienna and owned by just two caretakers since new. The odometer shows 34,800 kilometers, supported by the accompanying documentation. Last year the car received a major service at Porsche AVP Altötting.

Now the configuration. This is a manual transmission car, meaning full driver engagement rather than an automatic. A Cabriolet so you can enjoy open air driving whenever you choose, paired with the original factory hardtop that accompanies the car. The condition is exactly what you would expect from a Porsche with fewer than 35,000 kilometers. Exterior, interior, and mechanical components present beautifully. The leather interior is excellent and the paint retains a deep, impressive finish.

Then there is the color. Atlas Gray. A rare shade that gives the wide body exactly the right presence. In sunlight it reads as a subtle silver gray. In shadow it takes on a steel like tone. Not flashy, but perfectly suited to highlighting the lines of the 4S.

The Cabriolet is often considered the sweet spot of the 996 lineup. You drive with the top down, hear the 3.6 liter engine working right behind you, and enjoy the added assurance of all wheel drive. Install the hardtop during colder months and you effectively have a closed 911. Two cars in one, in a sense.

What makes this Porsche stand out is the combination. Wide Turbo body styling, manual gearbox, low mileage, thorough documentation, only two owners, and a rare color specification. That is not something you encounter often.

The 996 was once controversial. Today more people understand what it truly represents. A genuine 911 with performance, character, everyday usability, and styling that has aged remarkably well.
