The Ultimate Off-Road Icon – The 1987 Land Rover 90 Turbo D

Few automobiles have retained their distinctive design virtually unchanged over the course of decades while remaining instantly recognisable around the world. The Land Rover is undoubtedly one of those automotive icons. As the direct successor to the legendary Series models, whose history dates back to 1948, the Land Rover 90 represented the logical evolution of one of the most successful off-road vehicle concepts ever created. Its robustness, functionality and uncompromising all-terrain capability made it the vehicle of choice for farmers, expedition teams, military and emergency services, as well as adventurers across the globe.

With its characteristic aluminium body mounted on a rigid ladder-frame chassis, permanent four-wheel drive and generous suspension travel, the Land Rover 90 set the benchmark for demanding off-road use. The introduction of the 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine brought a significant increase in torque and improved everyday usability without compromising the vehicle's legendary off-road performance. It is precisely this uncompromising engineering and extraordinary versatility that have long since established the Defender as an automotive legend - both far beyond paved roads and in today's collectors' market.

The example offered here is an exceptional one. Originally delivered new in Switzerland, this Land Rover 90 underwent a comprehensive frame-off restoration by a specialist workshop dedicated to classic Land Rovers after accumulating approximately 220,000 kilometres. The vehicle was completely dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up, both mechanically and cosmetically. The restoration represented an investment of approximately CHF 80,000 and was carried out to the highest professional standards.

As part of the restoration, the engine was fully rebuilt, while the drivetrain and suspension were comprehensively overhauled. The chassis was galvanised and additionally treated with internal cavity wax protection to ensure long-term resistance against corrosion. Today, the bodywork is finished in the classic Land Rover colour Deep Bronze Green, complemented by a cream-white roof and matching steel wheels. This timeless colour combination perfectly emphasises the vehicle's authentic character while giving it an exceptionally refined appearance. The newly installed electronic odometer - deliberately the only departure from the vehicle's original specification—has recorded just 180 kilometres since completion of the restoration.

The interior has likewise been completely renewed. All seats have been rebuilt with high-quality upholstery, while the rear passenger seats have been fitted with seat belts. As a result, the Defender now accommodates up to seven occupants, combining its legendary off-road capability with a surprising degree of practicality and comfort. A particular highlight is the removable hardtop, allowing the vehicle to be converted into an open-top utility vehicle. In this configuration, it offers two distinct personalities: a classic Defender suitable for year-round use and an open off-roader that transforms summer drives into a truly memorable experience.

The Land Rover will be offered with a fresh Swiss roadworthiness inspection, with its most recent Motor Vehicle Inspection (MFK) completed in March 2026. Thanks to the exceptional quality of the restoration, the vehicle presents in mechanical condition approaching that of a new vehicle while fully retaining its authentic character. The outstanding standard of workmanship, the substantial investment and the classic colour scheme combine to make this Defender one of the most desirable examples of its type.
