Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992, Land Rover claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. Before the war, Rover had produced luxury cars which ceased to be in demand in the immediate post-war period and raw materials were strictly rationed to those companies' building construction or industrial equipment. Rover's original factory in Coventry had also been bombed, forcing the company to move into a huge factory it had built in Solihull to construct aircraft. The Series III is the most common vehicle, with 440,000 of the type built from 1971 to 1985. The headlights were moved to the wings and the traditional metal grille featured on its predecessor, was replaced with a plastic one. The production run for the Series III was from 1971 through to 1985 and during this cycle (1976) the 1,000,000th Land Rover rolled off the production line.
First registered 1974, this ex-military lightweight Series III was first road registered in 1992, coupled to the 2.2 litre petrol engine. This example retains its military colours and indeed much of its original accessories even including a field radio and replica firearm plus its original military registration plates with road over plates. Restored before 2020, it is in very good order but has been stored for the past 18 months so may need a minor service and possibly new battery, however seats, hood and body of this example are in very presentable order. Supplied with V5 registration document, military Land Rover SIII user manual and parts catalogue and a Haynes workshop manual, this is an ideal low maintenance example which would happily grace military events or be entirely practical for offroad use.
