One of Kurt Bergmann’s first Super V carsUsed in Germany for several yearsExtensively restored a good 15 years agoA piece of Austrian motorsport history

In 1971, Volkswagen lit the next fuse in motor racing for the masses: Formula Super Vee. With the ‘Super V Gold Cup’, it launched an international championship run over ten races. Bigger, stronger 1600cc engines catapulted the new category to Formula 3 levels of speed and performance. The starting point was the engine from Volkswagen’s Type 4.

No question, Kurt Bergmann was going to arm his Kaimann team for Super Vee as well. And successfully so. In the inaugural 1971 season, his cars won the Austrian 1300cc championship with Walter Raus and the aforementioned Super V Gold Cup with Erich Breinsberg. Straight out of the box, the Kaimann Super Vee had taken victory with Breinsberg in the annual Europe-versus-America showdown at Daytona Speedway in Florida. At the end of his most successful season yet, Kurt Bergmann was rewarded with the constructors’ trophy.

With Super Vee, Volkswagen moved further and further away from the original idea of those early years. Everything was tuned to within an inch of its life. Power soon climbed from 115 towards 150 bhp. By 1978, the regulations were already calling for water-cooled inline fours, propelling the cars to 250 km/h. But as the series turned its back on grassroots motor racing, it also sowed the seeds of its own demise. In 1982, it was all over.

One of the first of Kurt Bergmann’s new Super Vees was this 1971 Kaimann, number 710019. It went to Germany and Saarland racer Günter Weinrank, who campaigned it in numerous circuit races and hill climbs over two seasons. From 1973, its second owner, Roman Müller, concentrated entirely on German hill climbs. The Kaimann Super Vee passed scrutineering for the last time for the 1974 season. That autumn, its racing career was over.

In the summer of 2007, its last owner set about reviving the Kaimann Super Vee exactly as it had been in period, armed with a long checklist. In Günter Huber he had a former national champion and one of the best in the business alongside him. Invoices and notes were meticulously filed away. Right through to an engine rebuild in 2010.

With the project complete, the Kaimann Super Vee received the OSK’s final blessing in the form of a newly issued historic competition logbook. It subsequently appeared occasionally in demonstration runs, but never again in competition. Over the past decade, hardly even that. A thorough inspection before it returns to action is therefore warmly recommended.

Then this piece of Austrian motor-racing history can get back onto a circuit and prove why Kurt Bergmann, who died in 2021, was known simply as the ‘Masta’.
