For decades this Jaguar XK120 Drophead Coupé remained within the same American family, from its first registration in Arizona in 1953 through Californian registration papers preserved as late as the 1970s, an unbroken chain of ownership rarely documented in such completeness.
The XK120, unveiled at the London Motor Show in 1948, was fitted with an entirely new 3.4 litre six cylinder engine producing around 160 brake horsepower, enough to propel the car to well over 120 miles per hour and make it one of the fastest production cars of its era; the model name referred directly to that top speed.
The design came from chief stylist Sir William Lyons, who drew a streamlined, timeless body that gave the car not only striking performance but, thanks to its advanced suspension, surprising agility through corners as well; that combination of speed and composure helped build Jaguar's reputation for sporting, dependable motor cars and earned the XK120 recognition as one of the first true supercars.
This example, in left hand drive, was built on the sixteenth of June 1953 for Hornburg of Los Angeles, then the leading American importer of the marque, and found its way to Pernett Imported Cars in Riverside, California. officially confirmed by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, which issued a Production Record Trace Certificate on the twenty fifth of June 2020, number 67119, recording the factory specification of Suede Green with a Suede Green interior and a hood in French Grey, dispatched from Coventry on the twenty ninth of June 1954.
Today the car presents in a deep, richly finished green with cream leather upholstery accented by wood trim on the door cappings, complemented by a cream folding hood with a small rear window, while its original steel wheels wearing Jaguar hubcaps on Firestone "500" tyres and its complete chrome brightwork underline the model's timeless presence.
The car is accompanied by an extensive documentation file, including the original Jaguar Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbook for the XK120, the Jaguar Service Manual for the Mark VII and XK120 models, the original Spare Parts Catalogue for the XK120 dated October 1950, supplemented by modern reference works from SNG Barratt and Anglo Parts, two historic Jaguar dealer directories from the 1950s, the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust's Production Record Trace Certificate, and the surviving American registration documentation that traces the car's ownership history.
Built in 1953, this XK120 falls comfortably within the qualification period for the modern Mille Miglia storica, as the model competed actively in the original Mille Miglia between 1948 and 1954, rendering this drophead coupé eligible for entry into the present day event.
