There are very few cars for which the image is complete the moment you hear the name. Jaguar E-Type Convertible. Long hood, low seating position, wire wheels, and a road winding somewhere toward Cannes or Antibes. And frankly, with a Series 3, that picture may fit better than ever.
The Series 3 appeared in 1971 and brought with it a major technical evolution. Up front came Jaguar’s 5.3-liter V12, combined with greater comfort and a longer wheelbase. The E-Type became more mature, but fortunately no less special. Especially as a Convertible, it remained a car that combined elegance and performance in a way entirely its own.
Built in 1973, this example still features the stylish bumpers that suit the car’s original lines so beautifully. The longer wheelbase, the broader stance, and the low roofline with the top raised: the overall shape is simply stunning.
This example is finished in dark blue with a Biscuit leather interior. A combination that strikes exactly the right balance between elegant and sporting. Not overly flamboyant, yet distinctive enough to give the car that unmistakable sense of British class. The interior is well cared for, the leather presents beautifully, and the entire car makes a very neat impression.
The Jaguar was restored in the past and mechanically rebuilt. That quality is still evident today. The bodywork presents well, the interior is tidy, and on the road the car feels convincing and solid. And then comes perhaps the most important detail for the enthusiast. This E-Type has a manual transmission. That makes the entire experience just that little bit more engaging. The V12 has more than enough power, but with the manual gearbox, you decide the pace and character of the drive yourself. Cruising gently along the coast? No problem. Stretching its legs when the road opens up? It does that with equal ease.
From the hills above Cannes down toward Antibes, top down, the V12 humming away in the background, and nothing much to do except enjoy the scenery. Then back home, park the Jaguar in front of the country house, and turn around for one last look before walking inside. Some cars simply have that effect.
