Description

Few cars have changed the automotive world quite like the Citroën DS. When introduced, its futuristic styling, hydropneumatic suspension and advanced engineering placed it decades ahead of its competitors, earning its reputation as one of the most innovative automobiles ever built. By 1971, the DS had reached full maturity, and the fuel injected DS 21 Pallas represented one of the most desirable specifications available, combining the elegance of the luxurious Pallas trim with the smooth and refined 125 hp 21ie engine and sought after 5 speed gearbox. The DS 21ie produced 125 hp from its 2.2 litre fuel injected engine and could reach a top speed of 188 km/h, making it one of the most capable French executive cars of its era.

About this DS21

This exceptional 1971 Citroën DS 21 M5 Pallas is a remarkably original and beautifully preserved example finished in elegant Noir AC200 over its highly desirable original Tabac brown leather interior. Registered on January 1st, 1971, the car was delivered new to its first owner in southern Sweden, where it remained until September 3rd, 1975, when it was sold to the son of a close friend.Recognising the significance of the car even at that time, the second owner carefully preserved it as a collector's item for decades. Today, the car remains matching numbers, retains its original interior and carpets, and is accompanied by an extensive history file documenting its ownership, restoration and maintenance history. With just two owners from new and comprehensive documentation available, this DS represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples on the market.

Exterior

Finished in its elegant factory black paintwork, colour code AC200, the car presents beautifully and benefits from a high quality restoration carried out between 1986 and 1990 by a renowned Citroën specialist in Sweden together with the owner. During the restoration, corrosion was professionally removed from the sills, door bottoms and rear chassis sections before the body received a complete repaint.More than three decades later, the quality of the work remains highly impressive. The bodywork is exceptionally straight, the panel fit is excellent, and the car has retained the graceful presence that makes the DS one of the most recognisable automotive designs ever created. Having covered only around 15,000 kilometres since restoration, the vehicle continues to present at a level that suggests the work was completed only a few years ago.

Interior

The original Tabac brown leather interior is a true highlight of this car. Unlike many restored examples, this DS still retains its factory upholstery and carpets, all of which have survived in outstanding condition thanks to meticulous storage in a climate controlled environment with carefully monitored humidity levels. The combination of the black exterior and rich brown leather creates an elegant and timeless specification, perfectly complementing the luxurious nature of the Pallas trim. The cabin feels remarkably fresh and authentic, showcasing the extraordinary care this car has received throughout its life.An original Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio is fitted and remains fully functional, adding another desirable factory detail to this highly original example.

Engine

Power comes from Citroën's highly regarded 2.2 litre fuel injected 21ie engine producing 125 horsepower, paired with the desirable 5 speed manual gearbox. Widely regarded by marque enthusiasts as the ultimate drivetrain combination for the DS, it delivers effortless performance, excellent refinement and relaxed high speed cruising. The engine was comprehensively rebuilt during the restoration and continues to perform exactly as intended. The fuel injected four cylinder runs exceptionally smoothly with virtually no vibration, while the additional fifth gear allows the engine to cruise at lower revs, reducing noise and enhancing comfort on longer journeys.Combined with Citroën's legendary hydropneumatic suspension, the driving experience remains unlike anything else from the period. Quite simply, this DS drives exactly as enthusiasts hope it will.

Service and maintenance

The car has been maintained without compromise throughout its life and requires no known repairs. Recent maintenance includes replacement of the power steering linkage, battery, fuel pump, suspension spheres and brake pads.Further desirable upgrades include a stainless steel exhaust system and a set of Michelin XVS tyres in excellent condition. The odometer currently shows 156,000 kilometres, a figure fully supported by Swedish inspection records. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the car has passed every technical inspection throughout its life without receiving a single remark, a remarkable testament to both its condition and the care it has received.

The accompanying history file includes inspection reports, service records, maintenance invoices and restoration documentation, providing an exceptional level of transparency and provenance.

Summary

This Citroën DS 21 M5 Pallas combines all the qualities collectors seek: matching numbers, only two owners from new, fully documented history, outstanding originality and a highly desirable specification. Finished in elegant Noir AC200 over original Tabac leather, it represents one of the finest surviving examples of Citroën's revolutionary flagship.

For enthusiasts seeking the ultimate DS, this beautifully preserved and meticulously maintained Pallas is an opportunity that rarely presents itself.
