The most powerful version of the Autobianchi A112With its second owner in Vienna since 1997Remarkable state of preservationA thoroughly credible 63,500 kilometres
When Autobianchi introduced the A112 in 1969, the little Italian was essentially Fiat’s answer to the Mini. Front engine, front-wheel drive, a transversely mounted power unit and as much space as possible on as little road as possible – the concept was modern and, incidentally, served as a test bed for what would shortly afterwards go into large-scale production as the Fiat 127. Naturally, however, it did not remain a sensible small car for long.
In 1971, Abarth turned its attention to the A112. The engine grew to 982 cc, produced 58 hp and transformed the barely 700-kilogram lightweight into a surprisingly serious little sports car. From 1975, Abarth went one step further: 1,050 cc, twin carburettors and now 70 hp. There was no reason to hide that fact, so it was simply christened the 70 HP.
On paper, the figures may sound modest today. In an A112, they were more than sufficient. Its short wheelbase, low weight and lively engine meant that the little Abarth could trouble considerably larger cars on tight roads. A top speed of 160 km/h was possible, although the journey there was arguably more interesting than the number itself. Revs were very much part of the concept; restraint was not.
Over the years, the A112 underwent several revisions, but the Abarth consistently remained the most powerful version. Spoilers, sportier instruments and appropriate badging made it clear that this was no economy model. Later examples finally received a five-speed gearbox from 1978 onwards.
The A112 remained in production until 1986. By then, the Abarth 70 HP had long since demonstrated just how exciting 70 horsepower could be – provided there was little enough car around it.
This red 70 HP was delivered to Ebreichsdorf at the end of August 1985 through the Steyr-Fiat dealership of Fritz Neckam. Exactly seven years old, it was deregistered. Another five years later, it passed into the hands of its current owner in Vienna, who had driven no other make of car since the Autobianchi A112 first appeared on the market. He had already kept several examples until the end of their useful lives, making him a knowledgeable enthusiast – and all the more surprised by this particular car’s exceptional state of preservation.
Autobianchis were hardly renowned for their longevity, but he immediately recognised something special in this A112, which was, after all, the desirable and considerably faster Abarth 70 HP. The little Italian was therefore carefully cherished, kept in a garage throughout its life and driven only sparingly. The odometer shows just under 64,000 kilometres, a figure that, given the car’s condition, is entirely credible as the original mileage. The bodywork, paint and interior have survived remarkably well, not least because the 70 HP spent recent years stored in its garage. Its owner’s health had simply made continued use difficult.
We recently brought the engine back to life with remarkably little effort, although the fuel system still requires some attention. Conversely, it would be difficult to find another Autobianchi Abarth that has survived in such untouched condition. What presents itself here is a little wild thing that the passing decades have treated with remarkably little severity.
