Description

The historic collaboration between designer Sir Alec Issigonis and racing legend John Cooper transformed the humble British Motor Corporation (BMC) people's carrier into a dominant automotive masterpiece. By the time this model was manufactured in 1967, the Mini Cooper S had achieved legendary status worldwide. Its 'wheels at each corner' stance, agile Hydrolastic suspension, and astonishing power-to-weight ratio famously humiliated much larger, V8-powered competitors on the international rally circuit, most notably cementing its legacy with iconic victories at the Monte Carlo Rally.

An exceptional, beautifully upgraded example of the ultimate 1960s motoring icon, this 1967 Austin Mini Cooper S Mk I combines classic aesthetics with exhilarating, modernised performance. According to its accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, this factory 1275 S was built on 12th April 1967, specified with a fresh air heater and twin fuel tanks as standard. Exported new to North America in April 1967, the vehicle remained overseas until it was repatriated to the UK in 2018. It is now fully road-legal and registered with the DVLA on a highly distinctive registration mark, with all import duties fully satisfied.

Upon its return to the UK, the Mini underwent a comprehensive, ground-up restoration. As part of the rebuild, the vehicle was expertly converted from its original Left-Hand Drive (LHD) configuration to Right-Hand Drive (RHD). The body was treated to a bare-metal respray in its timeless Old English White and Black livery, while the subframes and running gear were media-blasted and powder-coated. The braking system, wheel bearings and ancillary running gear components were systematically overhauled or replaced with brand-new parts. Crucially, the car retains excellent provenance, showcasing its original 'A0' body number on the front panel, the original VIN/chassis plate on the radiator cowling and its factory 'FE' number, though it has received replacement front wings in the past. Under the bonnet, the mechanical specification has been heavily re-engineered for effortless high-performance fast-road use. The car is powered by a custom-built power unit utilizing a robust A-plus block, specifically tailored to accommodate a premium A-series Vmaxscart supercharger. The engine boasts a low-compression cylinder head, dished forged pistons, high-lift rockers, an SW5 camshaft, a Weber 40 DCOE carburettor and a modern, wireless programmable 123 electronic distributor. Power is driven through a modern remote change gearbox utilizing a long-legged 2.7 final drive ratio, transforming this Cooper S into a highly capable, high-speed motorway cruiser. The suspension has been converted to a dependable 'dry' setup. The handling is further sharpened by heavy-duty adjustable tie rods and upgraded engine steady mounts running from the subframe to the gearbox output shafts. The mechanical package has been meticulously dialled in, having recently received a comprehensive rolling-road tune and a full 'fast road' wheel alignment setup.

Inside, the cabin retains a wonderful sense of period originality, displaying an honest and charming patina with minor wear and tears reflective of its age. For enhanced long-distance touring ergonomics, the vendor has thoughtfully installed a pair of premium Newton Commercial reclining front seats. Offering the perfect blend of numbers-matching history, bare-metal restoration, and devastating supercharged performance, this Mk I Cooper S is an absolute weapon for classic rallies, fast-road tours, or any discerning collector looking for a Mini with an extraordinary turn of speed.
