What a beautiful car this 1972 Alfa Romeo 1300 GT Junior Bertone is. Some designs simply need no explanation. You see the perfect proportions and immediately know: this is exactly what an Italian sports coupé should look like. Add the fantastic combination of Verde Pino with a cognac-colored interior, and the picture is complete. Fortunately, with this example, there is far more to appreciate than its appearance alone, because the car was completely restored and rebuilt.
The story behind this Alfa is particularly interesting. The previous owner did not buy the car because he urgently needed a classic Alfa in which to cover countless miles. His enjoyment lay elsewhere: he wanted to restore it. And to do it properly. Starting with a sound, dent-free body, the 1300 GT Junior was comprehensively restored and rebuilt. The restoration process was extensively documented, allowing you not only to admire the finished result, but also to look back at all the work that preceded it. And that work is certainly worth seeing.
What makes this Alfa completely irresistible is its color combination. Verde Pino is one of those quintessentially Italian colors that seems to change constantly depending on the light. Combined with the cognac-colored interior, it works exceptionally well. Elegant, sporting, and unmistakably early 1970s. The body presents beautifully, with crisp lines, carefully finished details, and that distinctive Bertone shape that seems to suggest speed even while standing still.
And that naturally brings us to an interesting question: who is actually the artist here? Alfa Romeo commissioned the car, Bertone put its name to the design, and a young Giorgetto Giugiaro drew the lines during his time at Bertone. Perhaps the simplest answer is: all three. What is certain is that the result has become one of the most recognizable Italian coupé shapes of its era. Giugiaro would later go on to design an extraordinary range of automobiles, but this Alfa already demonstrates just how exceptional his sense of proportion was at the time.
The GT 1300 Junior was introduced in 1965 as a more accessible model within Alfa Romeo’s coupé range. But you certainly should not confuse the word “Junior” with dull or lesser. Beneath the hood lies Alfa Romeo’s 1,290 cc Twin Cam four-cylinder engine, featuring dual overhead camshafts and perfectly suited to the car’s lively character. Horsepower figures tell only a small part of the story here. The low weight, immediate throttle response, and five-speed manual transmission turn the Junior into a car that delivers tremendous enjoyment even at modest speeds. And this small engine runs so beautifully that it is genuinely difficult to put into words.
A good Alfa from the 105 Series feels light, compact, and communicative. The engine loves to be worked, the transmission encourages you to keep shifting, and every corner seems like a perfectly good reason to continue driving just a little farther. This is not the kind of classic where the destination is the most important part of the journey. You might easily find yourself missing an exit.
The interior is every bit as enjoyable. The cognac-colored cabin forms a harmonious combination with Verde Pino and gives the car exactly the warm atmosphere that suits an Italian classic from this period. The dashboard is clear and uncluttered, the instruments are positioned directly in front of you, and the seating position immediately makes it apparent that this car was developed with the driver in mind.
This Alfa Romeo 1300 GT Junior therefore combines one of the finest Italian coupé designs of its era with an exceptionally thorough restoration. Verde Pino, cognac, a lively engine, and those unmistakable Bertone lines: sometimes a great recipe does not need to be complicated at all.
This is an Alfa for the enthusiast who appreciates not only the finished result, but also the work that went into creating it. A fantastic 1300 GT Junior to admire at length, but above all, to drive. Because no matter how beautiful it may look standing in the garage, the best way to truly understand this Alfa is from the driver’s seat.
