When BMW presented the HP2 Enduro in 2005, it quickly became clear that the company had no intention of building a more comfortable GS. “HP” stood for High Performance, and BMW had consequently stripped away everything that would represent unnecessary weight in demanding off-road conditions.
The air/oil-cooled 1,170 cc boxer produced 105 hp and was housed in a lightweight tubular trellis frame. More important, however, was the weight: at around 175 kg dry, the HP2 was considerably lighter than the R 1200 GS of the period. Long-travel suspension, a 21-inch front wheel and the unusual rear air suspension made its intended purpose unmistakable. Tarmac was certainly not its primary destination.
ABS, generous bodywork and touring-oriented luxury played only a secondary role. In their place came ample ground clearance, plenty of torque and a boxer engine designed to keep working where conventional adventure bikes would already have turned around.
The HP2 Enduro remained in the range until 2008 and was produced in relatively limited numbers. Today, it almost seems like the antithesis of the increasingly large and heavy adventure bikes that followed. A big BMW boxer reduced to the essentials – and expressly designed to get dirty.
This HP2 Enduro was first registered in its Bavarian homeland in January 2008. It has been with its current owner for the past ten years, who used it occasionally for relaxed rides but never came close to exploring its true potential. To date, it has covered just 23,400 kilometres and presents in immaculate condition.
