Mercedes-Benz 560 SL – An Iconic V8 Roadster of the R107 Era
With the R107 series, Mercedes-Benz created one of the longest-lived and most distinctive roadsters in its history. Produced between 1971 and 1989, the open two-seater combined traditional Mercedes-Benz qualities with contemporary safety, excellent long-distance comfort and powerful engines. Its lengthy production run and continuous technical development made the R107 one of the most recognisable Mercedes-Benz sports cars of its era.
At the top of the American model range during the 1980s sat the 560 SL. Its large-capacity V8 provided effortless performance and made the roadster an ideal companion for long-distance touring. With 5,547 cc, 230 bhp and a four-speed automatic transmission, the 560 SL combines relaxed cruising with the commanding reserve of power for which a large Mercedes-Benz V8 is renowned. Its classic rear-wheel-drive layout further enhances the roadster's balanced character. Stylistically, the R107 also occupies a special place in Mercedes-Benz history. Its long bonnet, short rear deck and characteristic ribbed light clusters create an instantly recognisable silhouette. At the same time, its robust construction provides the sense of substance and quality that distinguished the larger Mercedes-Benz models of the period. The standard hardtop further extends its versatility, allowing the roadster to be enjoyed as a genuine year-round classic.
The example offered here dates from 1986 and was originally registered in the United States. The car was initially registered in New York before subsequently making its way to Dubai. There, it was purchased by the current owner from the dealer Al Tomimi and subsequently shipped to Switzerland, where it was imported. The original US Certificate of Title issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky is retained as documentation of this history. Finished in black with a brown leather interior, the 560 SL presents a particularly classic and elegant colour combination. The indicated mileage is 26,440 miles (42,500 kilometres). Its documented history makes this car particularly appealing to enthusiasts seeking a large-capacity R107 with relatively low mileage and a traceable international provenance.
The Mercedes-Benz has been regularly maintained, with servicing carried out by Mercedes-Benz in Sierre. Documented work includes replacement of the fuel-injection system in 2020, as well as replacement of the fuel pump and fuel filter in 2019. In addition, the rear crankshaft oil seal, steering linkage, track rods and both lower ball joints were replaced. These works demonstrate the care taken to maintain the roadster in sound mechanical and road-going condition, rather than concentrating solely on its appearance.
Behind the wheel, the 560 SL delivers that distinctive combination of comfort and effortless power that sets it apart from many contemporary sports cars. The V8 is smooth and refined, while the four-speed automatic transmission delivers its power with composure to the rear wheels. Rather than offering nervous sporting behaviour, the large Mercedes is designed for relaxed, rapid touring – a character that comes particularly alive on sweeping country roads and long-distance journeys.
The car is also accompanied by its original hardtop. Depending on the season and intended use, this allows the open roadster to be transformed into a comfortable enclosed touring car. Combined with its classic colour scheme, large-capacity V8 and documented mechanical maintenance, this 560 SL represents a compelling example of the later R107 generation – a Mercedes-Benz that combines the automotive grandeur of the 1980s with the timeless pleasure of open-top motoring.
