Overview

This car always attracts a huge amount of interest. Many interested people ask if it’s an Italian car.  Only a small number of potential buyers know of the LAGONDA Company and have limited knowledge of the car and brand. But everyone has lots of questions. To give you the best introduction to my car I‘ll first give you some key facts about it. LAGONDA-History (sourced from Wikipedia)

The Lagonda Company was founded by a Scottish-American, Wilbur Gunn. He was born in Springfield, Ohio. After completing his vocational training at the sewing machine manufacturer Singer he worked in its sales department. His great desire, however, was to become an opera singer. He emigrated to the UK to pursue opera training but, unfortunately, he didn’t succeed in becoming an opera singer. Instead, in 1901, he founded Lagonda Ltd. in Staines-Upon-Thames (Surrey). He began building motorcycles, tricycles and later "regular" cars. He derived the name LAGONDA from a river near his native city, named Lagonda Creek in the language of the Native American Indians. Right from the start, Gunn made every effort to publicly demonstrate the performance of his designs by participating in motor racing events.

In 1920 Wilbur Gunn died after a long illness. His successors built various automobiles - always very sporty, elegant - each model in comparatively small numbers.

In the second half of the 1920s and in the subsequent decade Lagonda built sports cars with two- and three-liter engines.  When these cars won a series of car races, the sporting reputation of the brand was established and enhanced. From 1928 Lagonda took part in the 24 Hours Le Mans Race. The biggest success of the brand was the victory of a Lagonda private team at the 24 Hours Le Mans in 1935. The Lagonda M45 brought a four-year winning streak of Alfa Romeo to an end. At this time Lagonda also competed directly with Aston Martin.

In 1935 Lagonda was taken over by the entrepreneur Alan Good. He reoriented the company with the help of the well-known designer, Walter Owen Bentley. Particularly noteworthy is certainly the focus on engines of the 4.5 litre class. The Lagonda LG45 Rapid on offer in the years 1935 to 1937 had a stunning, very sporty body and the famous 4.5 liter Meadows engine. The young Frank Feeley was responsible for the bodywork. The Meadows engine also available in the INVICTA had originally proved itself as a boat engine. Even today it is still considered extremely powerful and reliable. The Lagonda LG45 Rapid is repeatedly called "the most beautiful pre-war roadster" in the trade press. Even today, this vehicle is "Star of the Day" every time it appears.

The factory built only 25 units of this model. Of these, 24 are still known today with their chassis numbers. These "originals" currently trade for up to € 1.0 million. Unfortunately, these originals are rarely found "on the street". Too often they are displayed as show pieces by their proud owners. (Of course an unused car will slowly deteriorate.)Due to the fact that this model was extremely positively received by the market, about another 30 Rapid Specials were created. These vehicles were fitted by well-known bodywork companies based on the chassis of a technically identical Limousine sedan frame. Top specimens which only vary slightly from the originals can reach a market price of up to € 500,000.00.

My Lagonda LG45 Rapid

My special was delivered in 1936 as a saloon to the first owner and registered under the license plate CRU 772. From 1978 on, the owner was Ron Armstrong from Malaysia. From 1987 to 1988 it was subsequently rebuilt by the well-known Lagonda expert, Cedar Classic Car Ltd., with new bodywork by the well-known manufacturer Herb Schofield, using only original parts. The vehicle subsequently had the following owners:-          from 1992 to 1996 Michael Haag, Mannheim (CEO of COYS Europe)-          from 1996 to 2002 Erik Skreiner, Vienna (CEO of Allianz Austria)Since 25.04.2002 this really extraordinary roadster came into my possession. The vehicle has proved itself taking part in many well-known rallies (FIVA World Rally, Rally Paris - Deauville, Mille Miglia, Transappenninnica, Grand Premio Nuvolari, Austria Historic, Silvretta Classic, Karavanke Classic, etc.) and by several private outings.

Its authenticity is certified by a new FIVA Identity Card No. 035876. Since acquiring this Lagonda, I have carried out extensive maintenance and optimization work to improve its condition and usability. This work was carried out by specialized companies. I have brought almost all parts of the vehicle up to the best technical specifications (H4 headlamps, brakes, instruments, shock absorbers, stainless steel exhaust, leaf springs, reinforced clutch, radiator with high-performance power, new water pump, etc.). Of special note,

  • Rebuilding the engine with "State of the Art" components by LMB Racing in Belgium. The engine has a special crankshaft with bearing shells (CROSTHWAITE), titanium connecting rods, forged high-performance pistons, HD8 carburettors, new Magnetos. It has been run on the test bench for about 1000 km.
  • Substitution of the original transmission (crash box) with the optimal alternative "fully synchronized Alvis transmission" that was already available in 1936.
  • Overhaul of the steering and additional installation of EPS (electric power steering) in the Netherlands.
  • Complete restoration of the paintwork to the highest quality.
  • Optimal renovation of the interior, e.g. Manufacture of sun visors, Prestel + Gemmer RallyeMaster Competition, AverageMaster and DriversCounter, conversion of throttle and brake, additional LED lights for turn signals and stop lights, all instruments overhauled and fitted with added LED lighting.

All documents and invoices are available for scrutiny by serious enquirers. Through this extensive programme of maintenance and renovation I have invested a total of about € 200,000.00 on top of the purchase price. Today the vehicle is certifiably in the very best condition. All service work has been carried out by a classic car dealer. The annual oil change uses the best vintage motor oil, of course. No repairs are needed.

Mr. Thorsten Ruthmann (DEKRA CEO) prepared a detailed expert assessment in March 2017. (My Lagonda received the excellent overall score of 2.06. He writes in his report that comparable vehicles are currently not available on the world market. Since his assessment I have further optimized.

This report was also submitted to the "classic car guru" of TÜV Rheinland, Mr. Norbert Schröder, and endorsed by him. Both gentlemen are recognised as the classic car expert elite in Germany. Both drove the vehicle extensively. Both confirm that my car has exceptionally positive driving characteristics. You too can convince yourself that I am offering a unique vehicle here.

Serious enquirers are welcome to examine the report. A test drive and a detailed examination will certainly convince any real prospective buyer.

Every insider knows that this vehicle cannot be cheap. I guarantee, however, that every cent invested has created real value. I am very sorry that I have to part with this "gem" for health and age reasons.

All data was created to the best of our knowledge and belief and with the greatest care. A guarantee in the legal sense, cannot be given to an 80-year old classic car.
