The Fiat Dino was one of those cars whose name alone was enough to start a conversation. The Pininfarina-designed Spider was introduced in 1966, and beneath its long bonnet there really was an engine with Ferrari genes. Designed by Vittorio Jano, the two-litre V6 with four overhead camshafts was developed in connection with Ferrari’s Formula 2 homologation programme and found its way into both the Fiat Dino and its Ferrari namesake.
In the Fiat, the spirited V6 produced 160 hp and was paired with a five-speed gearbox – a combination that gave the elegant open two-seater decidedly sporting manners. Yet the Dino Spider remained remarkably restrained in appearance. Pininfarina resisted the temptation for unnecessary theatrics and instead created one of those designs that seems to grow more beautiful rather than simply older with the passing years.
This red Fiat Dino Spider 2000 was built in 1969 and was initially based in Switzerland. Irena Di Bartolo of 6883 Novazzano is documented as a former keeper.
The Dino later found its way back to its native Italy, where it was eventually acquired by the current owner. No further details of its earlier ownership or vehicle history are currently known.
Some of this Dino’s past therefore remains a mystery. Its essential recipe, however, is rather better known: Pininfarina, an open two-seater and a high-revving Italian V6. In 1969, one hardly needed much more.
