The Austin-Healey 100 BN2 is regarded by many enthusiasts as the sweet spot of the original four-cylinder Healey range. Produced for just one year between August 1955 and July 1956, it combined the purity of the original 100 with a number of important mechanical improvements that made it a far more enjoyable car to drive. Only 4,604 BN2s were built, making them considerably rarer than the earlier BN1, of which over 10,000 were produced. Although the BN1 was a great success, owners and journalists criticised one feature above all else—the gearbox. The BN1 used a three-speed gearbox with overdrive on second and top gears. In reality it had four forward ratios internally, but first gear was locked out after moving away from rest. This unusual arrangement worked well enough but lacked the sporting feel expected of a performance car.
For the BN2, Donald Healey addressed this criticism by fitting:
A proper four-speed manual gearbox
Overdrive operating on third and fourth gears
A stronger rear axle
Slightly enlarged rear wheel arches
Optional factory two-tone paint schemes
These changes transformed the driving experience and are the principal reason many enthusiasts prefer the BN2 today. Mechanically the BN2 retained the dependable 2,660cc BMC four-cylinder engine with twin SU carburettors. Typical figures were, approximately 90 bhp, Torque 144 Ib-ft, Top speed of around 105mph and 0-60mph in approximately 11 seconds. While these numbers seem modest today, the BN2 was one of Britain's fastest production sports cars in the mid-1950s. More importantly, it offered strong mid-range torque, making it effortless on winding roads.
During BN2 production, Austin-Healey introduced the 100M, a factory performance version. The 100M featured:
Larger carburettors
High-lift camshaft
Higher compression pistons
Cold-air intake
Louvered bonnet
Leather bonnet strap
Power increased to approximately 110 bhp, giving noticeably stronger acceleration. Around 640 factory-built 100Mswere produced, although many standard BN2s were later upgraded using the official Le Mans Engine Modification Kit. This has made authentic factory 100Ms particularly desirable today. Production ran from August 1955 until July 1956, after which the BN2 was replaced by the six-cylinder Austin-Healey 100-6.
Production figures:
BN1: 10,030
BN2: 4,604
Total Austin-Healey 100 production: approximately 14,600
Only 165 were right-hand-drive home-market cars, making original UK examples particularly sought after.
The BN2 enjoys an outstanding reputation among collectors because it offers:
The lighter, more agile four-cylinder chassis when compared to the later 6-cylinder cars.
The improved four-speed gearbox.
Simple and robust mechanicals.
Excellent parts availability.
Eligibility for prestigious historic events, including the Mille Miglia (subject to individual car eligibility).
For many restorers and enthusiasts, it represents the ideal balance between originality, usability and driving enjoyment.
This particular 1956 BN2 is an original UK RHD example as confirmed on the cars heritage certificate. Repainted in 2023 by Rawles Motorsport to the cars current Dark Green colour and fitted with the Le Mans conversion kit.
