1988 Lotus Excel with Dellorto carbs
The Lotus Excel (Type 89) is a sports car designed and built by British automobile manufacturer Lotus Cars from 1982 to 1992. It is based on the design of the earlier Lotus Eclat, which itself was based on the earlier Lotus Type 75 Elite.
Toyota engaged Lotus to assist with the engineering work on the Supra. Part of the deal between Lotus and Toyota included the use of many Toyota mechanical components in Lotus' cars. The original Excel (aka the Eclat Excel) used the W58 manual transmission, driveshafts, rear differential, 14x7 inch alloy wheels, and door handles from the A60 Supra. The engine was the familiar all-aluminium, DOHC 2.2 L Lotus 912 slant-four engine also used in the Lotus Esprit S3.
The body was made from vacuum injected resin and was mounted onto a galvanised steel backbone chassis. The suspension system consisted of a single transverse lower arm coupled with an anti-roll bar and a wishbone above the lower arm at the front while at the rear the wishbone was mounted below the transverse links. Coil springs and dampers were used throughout. The Excel is also known for its cornering and handling due to 50:50 weight distribution.
In 1988 the Excel received a number of under-the-shell improvements, including a lighter, cross-drilled crankshaft, new engine mounting legs and bell housing, altered rear body mounts, a boot floor brace and revised body shell undertray, and a revised fuel system.
The Lotus Excel that we are presenting here today comes out of a collection of a true petrolhead that enjoys working on his own classic cars, he also restores them himself. This Excel started her life over in Germany. During Covid he has put a lot of time and love into the Excel to make sure that she is in great shape. A lot of invoices are present with the car. She is refinished in a lovely coat of white paint with the correct decals. Inside you will find a lovely black leather interior in excellent condition. The previous owner was very meticulous and removed the interior to restore it. For example, he had the dashboard retrimmed in soft black leather.
Mechanically she is ready for many more miles. She is quite special as she comes with Dellorto carbs. To improve the engine further a 123 electronic ignition was installed a few years ago. Lotus is renowned for its handling and this Excel is better than the original with a lowered and uprated spring set fitted as well as adjustable GAZ shock absorbers. Also important to note is that she is a matching numbers. With the head of the engine being revised by the previous owner.
Are you looking for a rare, British sports car that handles and looks like a dream? We might have what you are looking for.
