Beschreibung

One of the most unusual racing liveries, required to represent the "Italian State Police Racing Team": this Alfa Romeo 75 3000 V6 Group A wasn't decorated this way for show, but rather to compete in rallies in the colors of the Police, complete with a specific law enforcement license plate.

It is one of 16 Alfa Corse bodies (chassis AC002)—based on the 1988 restyling by the Arese-based manufacturer—prepared for the aforementioned Italian Police racing team and completed in September 1989 with the famous 3.0-liter Busso V6. According to research, only two cars were built by Alfa Corse with the 3.0-liter V6, while the others were equipped with the 1.8 Twin Spark. Among various experiments, driver Gabriele Noberasco had already raced an Alfa 75 in rallies in 1988, but without much success.

The white and blue 3000 V6 truly burst onto the racing scene on October 22, 1989, at the Rome Rally, driven by Tagliapietra: perhaps a shakedown for the Giro d'Italia Automobilistico, which ran a couple of weeks later with the crew that accompanied it throughout its racing career until 1992: Vittorio Gommoso and Giorgio Nardin.

Over the next three years, the car competed in about fifteen rallies, fully documented thanks to its technical passport: among the most important were the Rally delle Polizie Europea, the Casentino, the Rally della Lanterna, and the Alto Appennino Reggiano.

After a period of inactivity, the car entered the Compiano collection and was subsequently purchased at the 2016 Duemila Ruote auction by the current owner, who restored the car to perfect working order by rebuilding the engine and overhauling the mechanics.

260 horsepower and the proven transaxle layout with a close-ratio 5-speed gearbox mounted on a custom, lightweight, and tuned body make the car extremely fun to drive, whether in rallies or hill climbs, or on the track. This is thanks to a fully adjustable suspension with shock absorbers and springs and the Brembo system, derived from the Alfa Romeo Formula 1 of a few years earlier, where the rear brakes are positioned at the wheels rather than inboard. The body features the distinctive features of cars built by the Racing Team, with lightweighting and reinforcements in the right places.

Inside, we find the classic Alfa Corse dashboard, simplified, with the fuse box and control unit facing the navigator, while the controls and instruments are black and contrasting orange.

The car recently obtained the FIA HTP and is ready to hit the track.

The car is visible by appointment in Bologna.

The Alfa Romeo 75 in racing: Group A, IMSA, and Superturismo

For many years, the 75 represented the last "true" rear-wheel drive Alfa Romeo: it joined the first Giulia GT—the one from the 1960s—on the podium of Arese's most competitive and iconic touring cars, literally revered by Alfa Romeo enthusiasts.

It was 1985, and the company was celebrating its 75th anniversary by presenting the successor to the "Nuova Giulietta" created seven years earlier: the 75. The Alfa Romeo Style Center, directed by Ermanno Cressoni, performed the magic of revamping the 1977 Giulietta, enhancing its mechanical setup: the aforementioned front engine with rear transmission and gearbox, mounted on a De Dion rigid axle, somewhat outdated at the time.

By 1986, with the new corporate structure "Alfa-Lancia Industriale" having been established, the company had come under the aegis of Fiat and was consequently forced to cease its Formula 1 commitments. It was then possible to focus on touring car racing, so dear to Alfa Romeo fans, but it faced rather fierce competition: BMW in particular, with the M3, had put a car designed for racing on the road, while everyone else was chasing the competition.

Some saw good potential in the newly born 75 and prepared it to Group A specifications, with the Busso 2.5-liter V6, ideal for competing against its German rivals, thanks to the homologation of larger brakes with a distributor, various gear ratios, body reinforcements, and various suspension improvements.

The Turbo Evoluzione was also developed at the Arese factory, based on the 4-cylinder version. It was developed specifically for racing and produced in a limited run of 500 road-going units, the minimum required for homologation in IMSA and Superturismo. In 1987, Alfa Corse, under the direction of Giorgio Pianta, invented the 75 IMSA to compete in the IMSA (International Motor Sport Association) championship. It was developed by engineer Gianni Tonti to compete in the second division (displacement up to 2.5 liters). After just one year, the championship series disappeared, continuing its run in the European Championship and various national touring car championships, which were in great demand at the time. The 75 hit the racetracks, driven by great drivers who divided their time between Formula 1 and touring car racing, including Alessandro Nannini, Nicola Larini, and Gianni Morbidelli.

Following the success of the early years, the Alfa Corse division began building racing-specific bodies after the restyling in the late 1980s, equipping the cars with 1.8 twin-spark engines, with only two examples featuring the 3.0-liter V6.
