History of the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

Launched at the end of 2004, the CLS-Class (C219) was a radical departure for Mercedes-Benz, creating the niche of the luxury four-door coupé. Based on the E-Class W211 platform, it combined the silhouette of a coupé with saloon practicality. Its low, sweeping roofline, strongly flared wheel arches, and sharp rear end stood out on European roads. The CLS gained recognition for its use of high-quality materials and advanced comfort features, while establishing itself as a benchmark for new executive-class designs until the end of its production in 2010.

Model History

The first generation C219 CLS-Class debuted in 2004 and received a facelift in 2009, with minor visual and technical updates. Its immediate predecessor was the E-Class (W211) in practical terms, given the underlying technology, but stylistically, the CLS had no direct forerunner. It inspired other brands to follow with their own four-door coupés. Successive generations included the 218 and C257, each evolving the concept further, but the C219 remains the archetype of the series.

Highlights of the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

The C219 CLS-Class fused four-door practicality with coupé aesthetics—frameless doors, low-slung roof, and a sharply pronounced rear. It featured luxurious interiors, extensive wood and leather finishes, and options like AIRMATIC air suspension, upmarket COMAND APS navigation, and high-grade sound systems. Engine choices ranged from smooth V6 petrol and diesel variants to the notable 5.5-litre V8 supercharged AMG, delivering dynamic, refined performance. Safety features included multi-stage airbags, ESP, ABS, adaptive cruise, and more.

Technical Data

Special Editions and Collectible Models

The CLS 55 AMG stands out as a genuine special model. With its 5.5-litre supercharged V8 (M113K, approx. 476PS/700Nm), unique AMG-specific 18" alloy wheels, upgraded brakes, sports chassis and distinct trim, it is highly regarded among performance aficionados and collectors. Some models offered rare paint finishes (e.g., Jaspis Blue) and exclusive upholstery options.

Engine and Performance, Transmission and Handling

The CLS-Class delivers a high level of refinement. Its sophisticated chassis, particularly models with the optional AIRMATIC air suspension and adaptive damping, balance comfort and dynamic handling. The range covers smooth V6s and muscular V8s, with rear-wheel drive and automatic gearboxes as standard. The AMG model with its 476PS supercharged V8 provided sports car-level performance. Brakes and electronics are advanced for the era, supporting safe, confidence-inspiring driveability. • CLS 350 (3.5-litre V6, 272–292PS): Preferred for balance of power and economy. • CLS 500/550 (V8): Delivers strong performance and smoothness. • CLS 55 AMG: Flagship for performance, highly valued by enthusiasts—0–100km/h in 4.7s, top speed limited to 250km/h (sometimes delimited on request).

Interior, Comfort, Exterior and Design

The interior features extensive leather options (black, beige, red), fine wood trim (root walnut or other woods), and options like heated, cooled, and massaging seats. The flowing dashboard, full-length centre console (optionally splitting the rear seats), and advanced infotainment define the cabin. Accessories like illuminated sills, AMG-specific detailing, metallic paint (including rare specials), 17–19" alloy wheels, and the signature coupé silhouette underscore the model’s distinctive appeal. Notable options are bi-xenon adaptive headlights, sunroof, double-glazed glass, and a high-end factory audio system.

Other Features

Well-kept service history (‘Scheckheft gepflegt’) is common and valued in the market. In some countries, youngtimer status brings tax-related benefits for business use. At launch, new prices ranged from €100,000 to €160,000 depending on equipment. The CLS also offered factory tow hitch as an option—a rare feature for a coupé.

Summary

The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class C219 redefined executive class design, merging the allure of a coupé with four-door usability and advanced comfort. Its blend of expressive design, luxury craftsmanship, and varied engine range means it retains strong demand and presence in the classic car market. High-quality materials, innovative features, and a strong following for the AMG versions make the C219 a standout among modern classics.
