History of the Ferrari F355

When the Ferrari F355 debuted at the 1994 Geneva Motor Show, it represented a significant step forward from its predecessor, the 348. Ferrari engineered the F355 for greater refinement, improved ergonomics, and, crucially, better driving dynamics. Advanced features such as an electronically adjustable suspension, enhanced brakes, and improved clutch underscored this leap. The F355 ushered in Ferrari’s transition into a new technological era while maintaining classic mid-engined proportions. The F355 was the last Ferrari with pop-up headlights and features like the “flying buttresses” on Berlinetta and GTS, referencing the classic Dino. Production of the model ceased in 1999 to make way for the Ferrari 360.

Model History

The F355 succeeded the 348, addressing critiques by pushing innovation in engine and chassis design. Available as Berlinetta (coupé), GTS (targa), and Spider (convertible), the F355 also introduced the F1 paddle-shift transmission in 1997—making it the first road-going Ferrari to feature this groundbreaking technology. Predecessor: Ferrari 348. Successor: Ferrari 360 Modena. In total, around 11,273 F355s were built: 3,829 Berlinettas, 2,577 GTSs, 3,717 Spiders, about 104 Serie Fiorano, and approx. 1040 Challenge cars.

Highlights and Key Features

The F355 marks the introduction of five-valve-per-cylinder technology in a 3.5-litre V8, producing up to 380 PS at high revs (8,250 rpm) and achieving 0–100 km/h in under 5 seconds. Its sharp chassis combined double wishbone suspension all around, with electronically adjustable dampers and a variable driving mode selector. The F355 is noted for its melodic V8 soundtrack—a trait highly valued among enthusiasts. It was also the last Ferrari to feature retractable headlamps. Interior options were extensive, with classic Connolly leather, various hues, and bespoke accessories like Schedoni luggage. Original sales price in Germany was around 220,000 DM in the 1990s.

Technical Data

Special Editions and Rare Models

  • F355 Spider: Convertible with electrically operated hood, subject to over 1,300 hours of wind tunnel testing for aerodynamics.
  • F355 GTS: Targa roof with removable panel; final Ferrari Targa.
  • F355 Challenge: Factory-developed race variant for the Ferrari Challenge Series, equipped with roll cage, uprated brakes, and unique trim.
  • Serie Fiorano: 104 Spiders produced in 1999 with sportier Fiorano pack (sharper handling, carbon interior accents), mostly with F1 transmission.
  • F355 F1: First Ferrari road car available with F1-paddle-shifted transmission (from 1997), a milestone for the Maranello marque.

Weak Spots and Common Issues

F355 buyers should pay close attention to several characteristic issues: soft-touch plastics used for switches and buttons can become sticky and unpleasant to the touch over time; exhaust manifolds are known for cracking; valve guides may wear prematurely, particularly on early models. Timing belts require replacement every 3–5 years or circa 30,000 km—a major service that involves engine removal. Neglecting this can cause catastrophic engine damage. Additional concerns include potential leakage from gaskets, and (on some cars) problematic window regulators and HVAC electronics.

Engine, Transmission and Road Manners

The transversely mounted 3.5-litre V8 in the F355 sets standards for both response and that renowned high-pitched exhaust note. Matched with a 6-speed manual or the pioneering F1 automated manual (the first of its kind in a Ferrari), the F355 delivers direct, engaging shifts. Its double wishbone suspension and electronically adjustable dampers (choice of Comfort/Sport) provide balanced, confident handling, suited to both fast road driving and track use. Ventilated and powerful disc brakes paired with standard ABS ensure reliable stopping. The F355 excels in agility due to its low weight and finely tuned chassis geometry. Factory power steering became standard in later versions, improving maneuverability. undefined

Design, Interior, Comfort and Equipment

Designed by Pininfarina, the F355 combines flowing 1990s style with timeless Ferrari elements. Pop-up headlights (last time on a Ferrari), sculpted "flying buttresses" on Berlinetta and GTS, and a sleek silhouette reflect both heritage and speed. Interiors featured extensive Connolly leather, including dashboard and seat options in bold colours like Rosso, Blu, Nero, and beige. Unique driving position with knees slightly bent, classic open-gate gear selector, and alloy shift knob define the cockpit. Leather upholstery, air conditioning, electric windows, and airbags (from 1996 onwards) were available, along with electric adjustment for seats and soft top (Spider). Optional Schedoni luggage, rare colours like Blu Swaters and Argento Nürburgring, and carbon or Alcantara accents (on Fiorano) enhance exclusivity. Wheel designs and trim details vary by version, with rare bespoke combinations highly prized.

Other Notable Features

The F355's development involved over 1,300 hours in the wind tunnel, resulting in a flat underbody and advanced aerodynamics for its time. Some accessories, such as original Schedoni luggage and toolkit, increase desirability. Cars delivered in rare colour-interior combinations stand out in today’s market, as do those retaining all original documents and maintenance books.

Summary

The Ferrari F355 exemplifies 1990s supercar progress with its innovative engine, world-first F1 paddle-shift, and precise chassis, all clothed in a Pininfarina shape that remains distinctive. Available in multiple body styles and rare special editions, it balanced everyday usability with race-inspired equipment. While maintenance demands are high, a well-kept F355 delivers one of the purest classic Ferrari experiences, both aurally and dynamically.
