Presented here is a completely restored and very rare 1967 Mustang GTA C-code.
Originally delivered in Texas, USA, it was acquired by the enthusiast owner in The Netherlands 2001. The current owner had the car completely restored in 2001-2002, both cosmetically as mechanically, and this car is ready to be used and driven anywhere.
The 1967 GTA model, with the A standing for automatic transmission, are sought after models. The GT-package includes front servo-assisted disc brakes, grille-mounted fog lamps, p, F70x14 tires, GT gas cap, the 1967 Handling Package, rocker panel stripe, and a GTA emblem.
Decoding the VIN number learns us that it left the San Jose, CA factory with the 2 barrel 289 V8 engine, which is a very rare engine option for a GTA car.
The standard black leatherette interior is exceptionally clean and in very good condition throughout. Both the front and rear seats are very presentable, with only very minimal signs of wear.
The original steering wheel has been replaced with a smaller diameter and a more modern three-spoke example. There is a crack visible on the top of the dashboard.
The car benefitted from a new carpet set and upgraded stereo system, as a part of its restoration back in 2002. Having been used very sparingly since the restoration, the carpets are not showing any signs of wear.
The door panels and black headliner are in good shape.
Since the owner restored the car back in 2002, it has been driven very sparingly, but always kept turn-key ready without any expense spared. The odometer is showing 35884 miles, which we cannot verify whether this is the correct mileage from new.
The bodywork was professionally restored in 2002 and painted in a red/orange metallic from Skoda, that very closely resembles Chestnut Metallic, which was a factory colour choice for the Mustang in 1970.
Since the owner was working at a professional body shop at the time the car was restored, great care was taken that the work was carried out to a very high standard.
The owner decided to put his own stamp on the restoration, by changing some details like chrome plating the grilles in the rear fenders.
Non-standard Wolfrace alloy wheels, shod with Radial GT Cobra Tyres are fitted. The original wheels are no longer with the car. The paint is of very high quality and is showing no scratches or other blemishes.
The Chrome and brightwork are in very good condition, with most items were professionally replated during the car’s restoration. Please note the grille-mounted foglamps, an optional extra that came with the GTA spec cars.
ENGINE AND GEARBOX
The 289 V8 engine was completely stripped and checked in 2002. At this time, it was decided to overhaul both cylinder heads, fit new valves and guides, and convert the head for use with unleaded petrol. The work on the heads was carried out by the Belgium company “Revisiecenter Hasselt”.
The bottom half of the engine was closely inspected, and everything was found to be within tolerances. The engine starts on the first try and feels very balanced and healthy. It produces no smoke and is running exactly as it should. A cold start video of the engine can be seen below.
SUSPENSION AND BRAKES
Being an original GTA-spec car, this Mustang comes equipped with power-assisted front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. New brake pads and liners were fitted 2002, alongside all-new brake flexible hoses and steel lines. The rear brake cylinders were also replaced, and the booster was overhauled. The brake system is still in perfect working condition today and in no need of any attention.
During the restoration, all the suspension bushes were replaced with new items, which translates into a very neutral and stable handling car. The suspension has been lowered, of the type visible above. The owner kept the original suspension setup, and this also comes with the car.
The underbody of the car is very healthy and dry. There is no rust to be found, the overall condition of the underbody is that of a rarely driven, solid, and clean driver’s car.
HISTORY AND PAPER TRAIL
The Mustang comes with Belgium registration documents in the owner’s name, making it very easy to register in any European country.
There is a truly staggering amount of invoices that accompany the car, both from during its restoration and also from more recent years, which really shows that the owner kept the car in a turn-key ready condition during his entire ownership. Many of the invoices and bills can be seen in the document gallery further below on this page.
A photo album with pictures of the car’s restoration is also present.
The owner kept the magazine where he saw the advert for the car back in 2001. The magazine and his purchase invoice from 2001 also come with the car. More pictures of the car’s history and restoration file can be seen in the document gallery below.
