• BMW 3.0 Z3 based 250 tribute
• Modern running gear with timeless looks

Inspired by the elegant short-wheelbase competition GT cars of the early 1960s, this beautifully executed tribute combines timeless Italian styling with the performance, reliability and everyday usability of a modern sports car.

The conversion is based upon a 2000 BMW Z3 3.0-litre manual Roadster, chosen for its well-proportioned dimensions, strong mechanical underpinnings and impressive performance. Its smooth straight-six engine, engaging manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive layout provide an appropriately sporting character, while air conditioning and electric windows make the car considerably easier to enjoy than the valuable period machinery that inspired its appearance. The project was undertaken by an engineer with a longstanding admiration for the celebrated European GT cars of the 1960s. Tribute Automotive glassfibre bodywork was used to transform the Z3, with the conversion incorporating a new bonnet, boot lid and wings together with a carefully reworked roofline. Considerable attention was paid to achieving the correct proportions and period appearance before the completed body was finished in the particularly attractive shade of Azzurro California Blue.

The transformation continued within the cabin, where the dashboard was rewired and redesigned to accommodate a set of suitably evocative Veglia-style instruments. Black leather upholstery provides an effective contrast with the exterior, while a Nardi steering wheel adds further period character.

Exterior detailing includes a traditional front grille, auxiliary driving lamps and period-style door handles. The appearance is completed by a set of traditional wire wheels fitted with knock-off-style spinners, giving the car a convincing 1960s competition-inspired stance. The conversion was accompanied by a mechanical overhaul and electrical work, resulting in a tribute that offers considerably more than visual appeal. The muscular 3.0-litre straight-six engine provides brisk performance, while the Z3 chassis delivers agile handling and an involving driving experience.

This is not intended to be a replica in the conventional sense, but rather an individual interpretation of one of the most attractive GT designs of its era. Combining evocative styling with proven BMW engineering, modern comfort and readily available mechanical support, this striking motor car offers an appealing opportunity to enjoy classic looks without the compromises usually associated with a genuine 1960s thoroughbred.
