Description

In 1999, Porsche unveiled a new 911 model known as the GT3. Designed as a track-focused road car, the GT3 stripped the standard 996 911 of many of its comfort features, added a stiffer sport suspension, and a completely different engine- based on that found in the company’s legendarily successful GT1 endurance race car. Little did Porsche know at the time, the GT3 would go on to become one of the brand’s signature models and create an entire genre of cars built by performance manufacturers as dual-purpose road and track vehicles.

This 2000 GT3 is one of these early cars from the 996.1 generation and was delivered new to its first owner in Germany in November of 2000. Finished in black, these early GT3s were far more understated than the current cars, and the only major difference on the exterior was the addition of the factory 996 Aerokit. This kit included the now highly sought-after “taco” rear wing, as well as lower side skirts and a front bumper with additional cooling. 18” multi-piece 10-spoke BBS wheels are fitted, and behind them sit red brake calipers on drilled and ventilated rotors. In 2020, this car had a minor incident that was reported to insurance, which necessitated some paintwork and a new wheel on the front right side. The repairs were professionally carried out, and looking at the car now, it would be very difficult to tell it wasn’t factory paint.

The interior of the GT3 is where most of the notable changes have been made. Much of the interior has been stripped out to reduce the car's overall weight, with just a pair of carbon bucket seats up front and no seats in the rear. Additionally, sound deadening has been removed for a bit more of that race car experience, and in this example, even the automatic climate control and air conditioning have been deleted. Behind the front seats sits a factory-installed half cage, which helps with chassis rigidity and looks excellent. Although the seats are set up for racing harnesses, red 3-point seatbelts are currently fitted.

Powering this GT3 is a version of the now legendary Mezger flat-6, with its lineage dating back to the 962 endurance race car of the 1980s and 1990s. Displacing 3.6 liters, this engine features a dry-sump oiling system and is free from some of the more well-known pitfalls in the standard 996 Carrera engine. Producing 360 horsepower at 7,200 rpm and 370 nm of torque, the GT3 is capable of 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and a top speed in excess of 300 km/h. The only gearbox available is a 6-speed manual, which offers precise and positive shift action and sends power to the rear wheels. The suspension has been lowered and stiffened around the car, resulting in a vehicle that is responsive and steering that you can feel every road imperfection through.

The 996 GT3 represents the beginning of one of Porsche’s most significant nameplates and by many accounts, is one of the most exciting generations to drive. It also bears noting that, outside of the RS cars, the 996.1 GT3 is the rarest of all the GT3 generations, with just over 1,850 examples produced over 2 years. If you have always wanted to experience the genesis of Porsche’s GT car program, this 2000 GT3 is a great place to start.
