Description

British Elegance in its Purest Form – The 1957 MGA Coupé

The design of the MGA traces its origins back to a streamlined MG racing car, built in 1951 for motorsport photographer George Philipps for Le Mans. Thanks to its aerodynamics, the modestly powered car achieved remarkable performance.

Initially, however, the high driving position proved problematic, a consequence of the old MG TD chassis on which it was based. A new chassis was engineered, and the prototype was presented to Leonard Lord, Managing Director of the British Motor Corporation. Lord initially rejected the idea of series production, having signed a contract just two weeks earlier with Donald Healey for the production of Austin-Healey cars. However, declining sales of the traditional MG models led to a change of heart, and the design was reconsidered.

Due to its aerodynamic styling, which differed significantly from previous MG models, it was named the MGA. When introduced in 1955, the model was regarded as the first in a new line of MGs. Despite strong competition from the Austin-Healey and Triumph TR3, the MGA became a huge success, particularly in the United States, where only 5% of all MGAs remained in the UK.

Our auction car also hails from the United States, delivered in March 1957 in Old English White with a red interior. The coupé arrived in Switzerland in 2012. Prior to its arrival, the bodywork, chassis, and suspension were restored in the United States. In Switzerland, the car—still equipped with its original interior—underwent a thorough engine and gearbox overhaul, including conversion to electronic ignition. Earlier this year, extensive work was carried out on the brakes and wheel bearings, and the tyres are practically new.

This very well-maintained example is further enhanced by new original carpet trim, the original jack with storage bag, and the rare original sun visors, along with a spare boot lid complete with original luggage rack. The MGA comes fresh from its Swiss MOT and naturally carries a veteran vehicle registration, underlining the outstanding overall impression of this classic British coupé from the golden age of sports cars.
