One-owner Mercedes-Benz dropside truckExceptionally well-preserved conditionRobust and straightforward commercial-vehicle engineeringA rare survivor from everyday working life in the 1980s

When Mercedes-Benz presented its new T1 series transporter in 1977, it was designed above all for one purpose: work. Winning beauty contests was rather low on the list of priorities. Nevertheless, the boxy “Bremer Transporter”, as it soon became known after its original production location, developed into one of the most familiar commercial vehicles of its era.

The 208 was one of the lighter versions. The model designation followed Mercedes‘ established logic: a gross weight class of around two tonnes paired with an engine producing approximately 80 hp. Depending on the model year, various four-cylinder petrol engines were used, always with rear-wheel drive and the robust, straightforward engineering that mattered far more in a commercial vehicle than any particular sophistication.

The dropside truck was, naturally, especially practical. Behind the angular cab began the part that really mattered: a large, flat load bed with folding side panels. Tradesmen, municipalities, construction companies and suppliers found plenty of uses for it.

Over the years, the T1 was continuously developed without fundamentally changing its original recipe. It was not until 1995 that the Sprinter finally replaced it.

Today, early dropside trucks in particular have become increasingly rare. Most were not preserved as collectors‘ vehicles but simply worked until there was nothing left to give. A well-preserved 208 therefore tells less of Sunday outings than of a long working life. After all, that was exactly what it had been built for.

This particular 208 dropside truck was clearly spared such a hard working life. A glance at its registration documents confirms this: to this day, only one owner is recorded. And he clearly took good care of his workhorse.

The Mercedes was deregistered ten years ago. It subsequently joined the collection of its current owner, who was just as impressed by its exceptional state of preservation as we are today.
