The R 129 was produced as the successor to the R 107 from 1989 until July 2, 2001.
Development of the R 129 began in the mid-1970s, but was initially put on hold because the new generations of the W 201 and W 124 required a lot of development resources. This also explains the unusually long production cycle of its predecessor, the R 107.
It was not until 1982 that the project was resumed. The design was finalized around 1984, and a patent was filed on October 2, 1986. Mercedes based the floor assembly on that of the W 124, but it was designed to meet convertible-specific requirements such as higher torsional rigidity.
The R 129 had a multi-link axle and an automatically extending roll bar, which deployed in a fraction of a second in the event of a rollover to protect the occupants. Initially, the R 129 was available with a 6-cylinder in-line engine and a V8 engine, and later the 12-cylinder V engine from the S-Class was also available.
Condition and history:
The SL was imported to Germany from the USA in 2015 and meticulously converted by the owner with his usual attention to detail for German registration, putting it in great technical and visual condition.
As with the other cars in his collection, the owner spared no expense to ensure that the car was in mint condition.
For example, the entire hydraulic system was repaired for €8,500, including the hydraulics for the soft top and all wear parts.
This R129 was delivered from the factory with the AMG styling package.
A beautiful car to drive. The rare panoramic glass hardtop is in perfect condition, and at the end of 2026, this roadster will be 30 years old and can easily be classified as a classic car.
Market classification
Truly outstanding examples of the Mercedes-Benz R129 have become a real rarity today – and vehicles in honest, original condition even more so. The market is shrinking, demand is rising, and authentic vehicles with character and substance are increasingly disappearing into the hands of collectors.
