At the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 450 SLC 5.0, a high-performance variant of the 107 series. It featured an all new 5.0-liter all-aluminum V8 engine, based on the 4.5-liter version, producing 240 horsepower and 40 kilogram weight loss. Additional weight-saving measures included an aluminum hood, trunk lid, bumpers, and light-alloy wheels, cutting over 80 kilograms or 175 pounds. The car was visually distinguished by a deep front spoiler, black rear spoiler, and gray side trim designed to reduce lift. The 450 SLC 5.0 was replaced by the 500 SLC at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, featuring updates like a four-speed automatic and redesigned interior.
In motorsport, the SLC 5.0 claimed notable victories, including the 1978 Vuelta a la América del Sur rally, where Andrew Cowan and Colin Malkin won by 20 minutes. Despite suspension issues, it also triumphed in the 1979 Bandama Rally and finished 2nd in the Safari Rally. These successes solidified the SLC 5.0's reputation as a competitive and versatile machine.
This 500 SLC hails from the penultimate model year of the model. The car was delivered new by Mercedes-Benz Frankfurt. in Lapis Blue metallic (932) over a splendid Grey velour (938) interior. This well-equipped example was optioned with an electric sunroof, central locking, Becker Mexico cassette stereo, automatic antenna, front arms rest, air conditioning, power windows, heat insulating glass, and headlight wiper/washers.
This rarely seen model currently shows just under 69,000 kilometers or the equivalent of 43,000 miles at the time of listing, which is believed to be original. As a result, the car remains in remarkably original condition. The paint meter readings show what is believed to be largely original paint throughout the car. Inside, the delicate velour upholstery still presents beautifully. Light modifications to the car include a modern Becker radio and a set of 15 inch “gullideckel” wheels from a later series R107. It benefits from a recent major service in February 2024 with an engine oil change, brake fluid flush, engine drive belts replacement, air conditioning service, and new Michelin Primacy tires fitted.
The SLC not only boasts a homologation racing pedigree, but daily classic useability of these models that made them ideal for long-distance touring when they were new. As a result, finding a low mileage, an original example like this 1981 500 SLC with recent servicing, is truly rare today.
The car can be viewed at our premises in Germany, 33415 Verl at any time by arrangement. A lifting platform is available for this purpose.
