Description

Mercedes-Benz 450 SL (R107) – Rare Aqua Blue

History & Provenance - This striking 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL (chassis no. WDB10704412 019185) was originally delivered to its first owner, Mr. T. George Hayakawa, on June 8, 1974, in Pasadena, California. Remarkably, Mr. Hayakawa retained the car until 2006. A comprehensive history file includes a collection of U.S. service invoices from his ownership period. Impressively, it still retains its original factory handbooks featuring the stamped chassis number, the original data card (Fahrzeugdaten), and one of the original keys. Supporting the car’s authenticity and well-documented history, the file also includes an official Mercedes-Benz callback letter from 1977 regarding a cruise control issue.

The car was later exported to the Netherlands and then Germany in 2014 by what would appear to be the cars second U.S. owner Mr. David Mariono. The vehicle finally received Historical Status German registration in 2016 and has since remained with a single German company/family. Between 2014 and 2016, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration, with numerous invoices from reputable sources, including Mercedes-Benz Beresa in 48683 Ahaus.

Condition & Features - Visually, the car is quite striking—finished in rare Aqua Blue, a color that tends to polarize opinions. It retains its original factory hardtop, now painted white, which shows minor damage at the front (documented in the photos).

The factory mohair soft top, finished in dark blue (code 744), is in near-new condition, having been replaced during the restoration. Being an early R107 build, this example avoids the bulkier U.S. bumpers and lights, preserving its original European styling.

Inside, the original factory blue leather seats are in sympathetically restored condition. The passenger seat shows some minor scuffing on the lower front area, and both door cards exhibit signs of sun damage—again, all documented. Noteworthy original features include the factory Becker Mexico radio (code 513), automatic antenna (code 531), passenger door mirror (code 502), and central armrest (code 570). Both electric windows are fully operational. However, the original factory air conditioning system (codes 580 & 583) is currently non-functional. There is currently no spare wheel but will be provided.

Performance - Under the hood lies the iconic 4520 cc Mercedes V8 engine, producing 225 PS—more than enough power to deliver a commanding and smooth driving experience. Paired with a 3-speed automatic gearbox, the car was mechanically overhauled during its restoration and drives beautifully.

Additional Notes - The vehicle is offered with a fresh German TÜV and an inspection report from a Mercedes marque specialist. * There is indication within the comprehensive file that the indicated kilometers were actually miles when the Tachometer was changed to an EU version during the restoration.
