Description

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is one of the most iconic classic roadsters of the 1950s and 1960s, combining elegant design, comfort, and accessible performance. First introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show and produced between 1955 and 1963, the 190 SL quickly gained a reputation as a stylish yet practical alternative to its more exclusive sibling, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. At its core, the 190 SL was designed for buyers who wanted the glamour and prestige of a Mercedes sports car but at a more approachable price. Built on a shortened version of the W121 saloon platform, the car featured a 1.9-litre in-line four cylinder engine producing around 104 horsepower. While it did not match the raw performance of the 300 SL's six-cylinder engine, the 190 SL offered smooth handling, refined driving characteristics, and reliability that made it suitable for both city use and long-distance touring. It could reach a top speed of approximately 107 mph, more than adequate for the era. One of the car's most enduring qualities is its timeless styling. Its interior echoed Mercedes-Benz's commitment to luxury, featuring high-quality materials, leather upholstery, and clear, elegant instrumentation. Owners appreciated its blend of comfort and sportiness, a balance that helped it appeal to a broad range of enthusiasts. Throughout its production run, around 25,881 units of the 190 SL were built, making it a relatively rare but not unattainable collector's car today. Its connection to the legendary 300 SL, along with its classic good looks, has made it highly desirable among vintage car enthusiasts. Well-preserved or fully restored examples often command significant prices at auctions and private sales.

Only a few right-hand drive examples were supplied new to the UK market during the 1959 model year, this example was one of those few, chassis 121.040-20-014566 was originally finished in the striking colour of red with a new beige hood. Issued with registration number '5 BOF' on 23rd September 1959 and still retaining the number, this example has spent the majority of its life in Surrey. One of only 562 units manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in right hand drive guise throughout the eight-year production run, this 190 SL presents exceedingly well. The vendor has just spent circa £12,000 on this Mercedes-Benz, including new carburettors, fuel pump and a thorough engine tune. Shod with a good set of whitewall tyres which help accentuate the shiny Fire Engine Red paintwork. The glovebox has an inset clock and the dashboard carries a Becker Mexico radio which is thought to be original to the car. Ultimately, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL stands as a car that embodied the glamour of postwar Europe and the growing international reputation of Mercedes-Benz. It wasn't the fastest sports car of its time, but it delivered style, quality, and everyday usability, making it an enduring classic and a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz's rich heritage in open-top motoring. Consigned by Stewart Banks.

Interested parties should note that the original brown hood has been replaced with a new beige hood since the photoshoot.
