The Shah of Persia, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was a major shareholder in Daimler-Benz during the 1970s. He needed off-road vehicles for his army, and 20,000 units were to be built. At the same time, Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria was looking for a replacement for the Haflinger, a vehicle renowned for its off-road capabilities. This is how the cooperation came about. The aim was to create the best off-road vehicle! Production began in Graz, Austria, in February 1979. The first G-Class model, the 460, was produced until 1991. To this day, these off-roaders have been built in Graz for more than 46 years with virtually no changes to their exterior. A true record!
But where can you still find a G-model from the first year of production? It’s our 230 G Cabriolet with a short wheelbase, built in 1979! The classic car was completely rebuilt at Mercedes-Benz in Hanover, sparing no expense. The folding soft top is also new. The early 460 series is still a purist off-roader without modern components.
