HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
The Mercedes-Benz W110 ‘Heckflosse’: it derives its nickname from the then-unusual fins on the rear, which were commonly found on American cars. From Mercedes’ perspective, these fins had a functional purpose as well as an aesthetic one: they served as corner markers, which were intended to make reversing into a parking space easier. This Mercedes-Benz 230, type W110 “Heckflosse”, originally delivered in the Netherlands and built in 1967, was delivered new on 20 October 1967. Relatively few of the powerful second-generation W110 230 models were built compared to the 4-cylinder models: approximately 40,000 units (compared to approximately 230,000 4-cylinder models). A notable feature is that the original registration document is still with the car. Maintenance invoices (from the official Mercedes-Benz dealer) are also included, as are photographs, MOT forms and a valuation report from 2024. The car is exempt from road tax and MOT in the Netherlands. The condition of the car appears to match the mileage.

EXTERIOR
The bodywork is in an unrestored condition and is still taut and pristine. The black paintwork is elegant and bears the colour code 040 G (Glanz). The wheels are fitted with black hubcaps featuring chrome trim rings, and the tyres have a subtle white sidewall. The exterior condition is very good with a glossy paint finish. The chrome trim and rubber seals are also in good condition.

INTERIOR
The interior features light grey Mercedes-Benz Tex upholstered seats and headlining in good condition. Inside the car, you feel as though you are in the ultimate class and grandeur. A special and optional feature is the manual floor-mounted gearbox. The imposing large steering wheel invites you to drive. The dashboard is black and includes a clock and heating controls. The interior is in good, original condition. The rear seat is also undamaged and features a fold-out centre armrest. A fire extinguisher is located under the front seat. The original tool kit and jack are present. The boot is tidy and accommodates the spare wheel.

TECHNICAL
This W110 is fitted with the most powerful and rare engine available: the 2.3-litre M180.949 6-cylinder engine. This delivers 120 hp (88 kW; 118 hp) at 5400 rpm and 18.2 kg·m (178 N·m; 132 lb·ft) at 4000 rpm (piston speeds 13.1 m/s max., 9.7 m/s average). The engine runs smoothly without any noise. The gearbox is also smooth to operate. The Maxxis tyres have sufficient tread. The car has been well maintained and a comprehensive service history is included.

GENERAL
The Mercedes W110 was a 4-door saloon built between 1961 and 1968. The car is also known as the ‘Heckflosse’ and was the predecessor to the later E-Class. The name ‘Heckflosse’ derives from the body shape and is German for ‘tail fin’. Although the era of tail fins had already passed its peak, this somewhat daring design was nevertheless chosen. This is particularly evident when comparing the car with its predecessor, the Ponton. The model made its debut in 1961 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In 1965, the W110 received a facelift. The chrome on the wings was removed and the indicators were moved below the headlights instead of on the front wings. The rear lights were enlarged and the indicator light changed from white to orange. Some changes were also made to the interior. In addition, the engines were overhauled. The 190C was replaced by the 200C and the 190DC by the 200DC, and a 230 model became available. This was derived from the S-Class and had an output of 120 hp. A total of 67,789 200Cs were produced, 159,365 200DCs and 39,619 230s. Production ceased in February 1968, and at the end of 1968, the successor, the W115, went into production.
