This is the 1989 Isdera Spyder 036i, a car that perfectly illustrates how adventurous and fascinating the automotive world could be during the nineteen eighties. When people speak about iconic supercars from that era, names such as the Ferrari F40, Porsche 959 and Lamborghini Countach usually come to mind. Yet alongside those legends there were also small and highly exclusive manufacturers who created their own interpretation of the ultimate sports car. Isdera may well be one of the finest examples.
Isdera was founded in 1982 by German engineer and designer Eberhard Schulz. His career began at Porsche, where he quickly gained recognition for the prototypes he built independently. Schulz had a clear philosophy: extremely limited production, hand built automobiles and an unmatched level of exclusivity. His cars were not sold through dealers and were never widely advertised. Anyone wishing to order an Isdera simply had to contact Schulz directly. In practice this meant calling the company founder personally to discuss the purchase of a car.
Each Isdera was then built entirely by hand by a small team of craftsmen. The process often required roughly one year for a single car, which explains why production numbers remained exceptionally low.
The Spyder series formed the heart of the brand. The first model appeared in the early nineteen eighties and was powered by Mercedes Benz engineering. In 1987 Isdera presented the ultimate evolution of that series at the Geneva Motor Show: the Spyder 036i.
This version received a powerful Mercedes Benz inline six cylinder engine paired with a manual transmission and a mid engine configuration. The chassis consists of a tubular frame while the bodywork is extremely lightweight. The result is a sports car that is not only light and fast but also possesses a truly distinctive character.
What immediately stands out about the Isdera Spyder is of course its design. The car carries a very distinctive nineteen eighties appearance with sharp lines, a very low seating position and spectacular gullwing style doors. The overall impression is almost that of a concept car, yet one that was genuinely hand built and driven on public roads.
Across all generations of the Spyder series it is estimated that only fourteen cars were ever produced. This makes the model an exceptionally rare piece of German automotive history today.
The example presented here dates from 1989 and remains in beautifully maintained and very well preserved condition. In 2012 several factory options and updates were carried out, all in line with the original Isdera specifications.
Beneath the compact rear engine cover sits a powerful Mercedes engine fitted with an AMG block, perfectly suited to the character of the car: light, direct and mechanically pure. Everything about this Isdera feels handcrafted and exclusive, exactly as Eberhard Schulz intended.
What you see here therefore is not just another sports car from the nineteen eighties. This is a hand built Isdera from a small German manufacturer that created its automobiles strictly to order for a very select group of clients.
