Description

1949 Humber Super Snipe Convertible
Chassis number: 8801475HS0
Registration Number: VDY511
The Super Snipe Mk. II was announced in mid-September 1948 and was mostly redesigned in chassis and body. Now a full six-seater with a bench-type front seat, it was given a wider track and a variable ratio steering unit. 124 Mk. II Super Snipes were made by the Newport Pagnell coachbuilders Tickford and were equipped with streamlined six-seater convertible bodies, detachable panels enclosing rear wheels, and concealed door hinges. These were much more sophisticated than the Super Snipe open tourers which the firm had produced during World War II and which had been favourites with the military as staff cars.
Of the original 124 Tickford bodied examples, a dozen were earmarked for British Royal Family touring duties on the African continent. It is believed that only 26 of these handbuilt cars have survived, even fewer actually still being on the road as this rarity is.
The car was repatriated from the Middle East & now resides in a small collection. The cream paint is of more recent origin & presents well. The interior is green along with green door cards & green carpets. A new cast iron head was recently sourced & fitted with the old head being in the boot of the car.
These Humbers are simply vast vehicles with acres of room & seating for 6 in comfort. It starts readily & runs beautfully with easy gear changes from the column mounted lever. The hood is of beige canvas & is in good order overall & is easy for two people to lower or erect.
Viewing are by appointment in the Black country near Kiddrminster.
