Description

In 1966 when Alfa Romeo presented the new Spider model, the challenge was significant replacing the beautiful and popular Giulia/Giulietta Spider. It was loved by all Italians and featured in many movies. However, the famous design house Pininfarina managed to give Alfa Romeo one of the greatest sportscar successes ever, with a design that survived more or less unchanged for 4 decades. Kick-staring the new 105-series Spider among car lovers was undoubtedly its participation in the 1967 movie ‘The Graduate’, debuting Dustin Hoffman and with Anne Bancroft as the beautiful and seductive Mrs. Robinson. To make even more fuss around the presentation, Alfa Romeo announced a naming competition, having the winner receiving one of the new models as a prize. And thus, the nickname Duetto was born, a name the Italians continued to use for an Alfa Romeo Spider over time.

The original Duetto from 1966 came with the 1600 engine and with the continuous model development, the 1750 Spider Veloce was added in 1968. Still with the well-known “North” aluminum twincam engine, 2 double carburetors, 5-speed gearbox and disc brakes all around. The result was a fast and elegant sportscar, with a surplus of mechanical delights  compared to competitors of the time.

This car was born in 1969 and originally delivered (like the most) to the American market, where it was sold to a Dane living in the USA back in 1991. The car travelled with the owner around the world, until they finally came home to Denmark in 2017. The car has been meticulously serviced and cared for, even including a full rebuild of engine and gearbox. The original mechanical Spica injection system was converted into classic Weber carburetors, so that sound and power was brought back. All backed up by an extensive photo documentation. Today the car present itself in a fantastic condition, and drives absolutely excellent. The engine and transmission are a real pleasure to operate, one clearly feel that love has been put into the work. This is a true great opportunity to acquire a healthy and well running “Duetto”, which for sure will provide its future owner lots of merry driving.
