Introduced in 1963, the Giulia SS was essentially a larger engined version of the earlier Bertone-designed Giulietta SS, itself inspired by Alfa Romeo’s achingly beautiful ‘Disco Volante’. While Alfa Romeo developed the model over time, all Sprint Speciales adhered to a basic concept of lightness and aerodynamic efficiency, using both to extract maximum performance from the familiar four-cylinder, twin-cam Alfa Romeo engine.

Built in January 1964 as a standard Giulia SS, this example became was a mere 25 Sprint Speciales supplied to Alfa Romeo UK in July that year, who in turn passed them to Ruddspeed to undertake factory-sanctioned right hand drive conversions. This officially-recognised modification makes this Giulia a very rare car indeed.

Currently showing just under 62,853 miles and with its sixth owner, this Alfa Romeo comes with an extensive history file detailing work done over the years. Of particular note is the interior work by well-known specialist and Alfa Romeo enthusiast Anthony Coburn, who himself owned the car from 1979 to 2010, and also oversaw an extensive restoration by Benalfa Cars. The Giulia has subsequently entered numerous concours events and has been with its current custodian – another Alfa-Romeo enthusiast - since 2022, though used very sparingly since then.

Although it now counts as a slightly older restoration and does show a few very minor imperfections, there is no doubt this Sprint Speciale still presents excellently in red over black/red interior, the latter still a fine testament to Mr. Coburn’s work. Mechanically it has also been well cared for and is in superb fettle. Whether you’re lusting for ‘La Dolce Vita’, or in dire need of some drop-dead automotive design, this Giulia Sprint Speciale is the answer, regardless of the question. Consigned by Charlie McCreery
