The Volkswagen T1 has long been regarded as one of the great icons of automotive history. Produced in Germany from 1950 onwards, the Transporter evolved from a straightforward commercial vehicle into a symbol of travel, leisure and, ultimately, an entire way of life. Today, the highly equipped Samba versions are particularly sought after, with their numerous windows and unmistakable appearance.
While production of the T1 in Germany ended as early as 1967, production continued in Brazil for many years. As a result, T1s were built there well into the 1970s, including this 1975 example.
Little is known about the vehicle’s early history in Brazil. It appears that, before arriving in Austria, the Volkswagen underwent an extensive restoration and was converted into a Samba-style bus with camping equipment. It therefore combines the distinctive appearance of the popular window bus with a considerably more practical interior designed for travel and leisure.
In 2019, the current owner discovered and purchased the Volkswagen at a show in Upper Austria. The following year, the bus received Austrian individual approval and was officially registered in Austria.
Today, this Brazilian T1 presents as a colourful classic with an added sense of adventure – a Volkswagen in which the journey to the next campsite is probably every bit as important as the destination itself.
