The Volkswagen Beetle (officially the ‘Type 1’), although a product of the Nazi regime to create a people’s car – suitable to mobilise a nation and use the country’s growing road network but simple to mass produce and repair – went on to become possibly the most widely recognised car in the world. Designed in the 1930s, volume production did not commence until after the War – initially under British control – and, such was its enduring popularity, production only ended in 2003 after more than 21 million cars had been built. Whilst the car went through various style changes in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, and acquired larger, more powerful engines, it retained its original distinctive shape – giving rise to the ‘bug’ and ‘beetle’ nicknames.

The 1200 model had been introduced in the mid-50s and whilst both 1300 and 1500cc models were introduced during the Sixties, the smaller engined variant continued in production into the 1970s. Considered to be the ‘basic’ model, it did benefit from many of the bodywork and mechanical changes made to the larger-engined options, such as 12 Volt electrics and all synchromesh gearbox. Production ended in Germany in 1977 but continued in Mexico until 1985.

This 1200 was first registered new in the UK in March 1971. The first owner kept the car in excellent condition, with relatively little use until 1985 when he traded it in for a newer vehicle. A local VW dealership then kept the car as a display item until 1997. Given its very original condition, it featured in the July 1996 edition of VW Motoring magazine, which reported that it had covered just 11,933 miles at that time.

In 1997 the car moved back into private ownership, passing through a number of owners, some of whom were regular Concours exhibitors with the vehicle. The last MOT record – issued in March 2021 - shows the car had now covered a total of 33,931 miles during its lifetime. It passed to a Jersey based owner shortly afterwards and was re-registered in the island in June 2025.

Having been regularly serviced and receiving maintenance work as required, the Beetle is in very good driving condition - starting, driving and stopping just as it should.

The bodywork is in excellent condition in its smart Marina Blue finish. The wheels and all brightwork are in equally good condition. The history file shows that the running boards and both front and rear bumpers (chromed stainless steel) have been replaced in the past. One optional extra has been fitted – rear mudflaps.

Being the basic, economy model, the interior is deliberately spartan as Volkswagen intended - painted dash and rubber flooring, no dash grab handle, just one sun visor – but is in close to immaculate condition, including seats, headlining and doorcards. The Beetle does have modern, inertia reel seatbelts.

This VW Beetle is near unique because of its very original, low mileage status. The large accompanying history file – which includes the full MOT record from 1974 to 2021 – does not indicate that it has needed any significant restoration work and has just benefitted from regular servicing and maintenance work as required.

In excellent condition throughout, the Beetle comes with an original VW instruction manual and part-completed service record, together with a VW AutoMuseum issued heritage certificate detailing build and despatch dates.

The car is currently Jersey registered and we can assist with (international) shipping and importation processes if required.
