“Revenge of the Fried Egg Headlights”

Porsche 996 GT3 Cup

Ex-Asch, Werner, Huisman car

Ready to race in NLS, Supercar Challenge, Ferdinand Cup and Le Mans Classic

Of all the one-make GT series that have emerged around the world over the past three decades, Porsche Cup racing is widely considered to be the pinnacle. With literally dozens of national and regional Porsche Carrera Cups and Porsche Sprint Challenges, culminating in its Grand Prix-supporting Porsche Supercup, the Stuttgart brand has created its own talent ladder for aspiring young drivers as well as gentlemen drivers who aim to progress to multi-brand sportscar racing and, ultimately, Le Mans.

In fact, the various Porsche Cups helped as much as the 1998 Le Mans win with the 996-shaped 911 GT1 to re-establish Weissach’s reputation as the top dog in sports car development when Porsche AG was bouncing back from dire straits at the turn of the century. At the time, the 996 iteration of Porsche’s bread-and-butter 911 design with its ‘fried egg’ headlights was frowned upon, and its designer Harm Lagaaij was open about cost-saving being the driving force behind their introduction. Today, as the water-cooled 996 is experiencing some kind of reappreciation among connoisseurs, the Dutchman is proud of the design that he came up with in 1997.

The 996 continued to be the backbone of Porsche’s various Cup series until 2006, even after the 2004 introduction of the 997, as the Turbo S, GT2 and GT3 – with the Cup car based on the latter – remained in production for two more years. This particular example saw the light of day in 2003 when it was delivered in Weissach to Porsche Zentrum München on 17 January.

In the three years following, the car was entered in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland for various drivers including Günther Blieninger and Oleg Kesselman. In 2004, Kesselman and Ivano Giuliani also campaigned it in two Supercup races at Monaco and Monza respectively. As the PCCD ran on the DTM support bill at the time, DTM star Roland Asch was recruited in 2005 to share the car alongside WTCC driver Duncan Huisman and Porsche junior Dirk Werner, as the second entry in a two-car team. Alongside Jochen Rohr, Huisman and Werner also made several appearances in the Supercup. Running under a variety of team names (MRS-Team PZM, Yarpivo Racing MRS and MRS PC-Service Team), this 996 GT3 Cup was entrusted to Karsten Molitor’s renowned Porsche team MRS (Molitor Racing Systems), which is still active today as MRS GT-Racing in the 24H Series and the Prototype Cup Germany. It’s in the hands of its current owner since 2008, who first raced it in several German Cup rounds before progressing to the VLN in 2011.

Having received maintenance and support from Joos Sportwagentechnik from 2008, the car is eligible for a wide range of racing series today, from modern championships such as the NLS, the Supercar Challenge or the Belcar Endurance Cup to various Porsche-based series like the Ferdinand Cup Next Gen, the Porsche Club Historic Challenge GLP and the Porsche Classic Cup at Le Mans Classic.
