We are delighted to offer this incredibly rare and special pre-merger AMG. This German-market 300E 3.4 is one of just 30 cars built with a manual transmission. Exceptional condition with the provenance of certification from AMG themselves.
Worldwide, 133 300E 3.4s were built. Known as the ‘baby hammer’, the 3.4 started with a 300E-24 as its base. This was an interesting car in its own right as it introduced the new 4-valve per cylinder 3-litre M104 engine – a high-revving and overtly sporting powerplant. In manual transmission form it was also the only model to use the dog-leg Getrag gearbox also found in the 190E 2.5-16 and BMW E30 M3.
By reworking the engine combined with uprated suspension, larger wheels and tyres, and more aggressive bodystyling, AMG created a car that was, particularly in manual form, a car to rival BMW’s M5, and perhaps much more of a driver’s car than Mercedes and AMG’s more typical automatic muscle cars.
This example is a German-ordered car that went direct to Affalterbach for conversion and one of the earliest 3.4s built. Finished in desirable Pearl Grey metallic with black Sportscheck cloth trim. The base car’s specification includes air conditioning, electric steering column, Sportline seats – with 2x individual rear seats – Becker Mexico, fire extinguisher and electric windows, plus the sought-after ASD (locking rear differential).
AMG’s conversion added the bodystyling, colour-coded the external trim and modified the wheel arches to accommodate the 17in Aero 1 wheels and 235 tyres. AMG springs and dampers supplied by Bilstein tighten up the suspension.
Inside a new 280km/h speedo hints at what the new hand-built engine can do. The bore is increased, the stroke is increased and new lightweight pistons are fitted to stretch the capacity to 3.4-litres. The intake and cylinder head are matched and ported, the valve and ignition timing modified to suit, all adding up to a power output of around 268bhp.
This car remained in Germany until 2024 when it was purchased and imported by a UK-based collector. In 2022 the car was subject to a light restoration costing in excess of €35,000, including a complete repaint in its original colour, underbody dry ice, refurbished wheels, new Dunlop tyres and all fluids and filters.
Since arriving in the UK, we have looked after this AMG, attending to anything required.
The car has been inspected and as a result a certificate of authenticity signed by Mr Melcher, founder of AMG, comes with the car. The correct stickers are present under the bonnet and, of course, the correct stamping to the engine block.
With the passion and demand for all things pre-merger AMG continuing to rise, this exceptionally rare 3.4 manual in desirable colours and with impeccable provenance offers a unique opportunity to acquire one of AMG’s greats.
