The immediate post-war period presented the European motor industry with major challenges. Jaguar was among the manufacturers that managed to make a particularly impressive comeback. The Jaguar Mark IV 2½ Litre Saloon was based on the model introduced by SS Cars before the Second World War, but was continued under the Jaguar name after the war ended. It thus marked the beginning of the era in which Jaguar was to develop into one of the most renowned British car brands.
With its classic saloon body, free-standing wings, distinctive radiator grille and harmonious proportions, the Mark IV epitomises the elegant style of British cars of the 1940s. The 2.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine with overhead valves was regarded at the time as reliable and high in torque, and gave the comfortable saloon respectable performance figures.
