Descrizione

This Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Cabriolet (W111) for sale, is one of the sought-after 3.5 liter V8 factory convertibles of which only 1,2302 units were built.

It is a initial German delivery, which was delivered to an American citizen in 1970. Mercedes-Benz allowed American customers to "pick up" their new vehicle in Germany - this had two major advantages - The price became much more moderate and the buyer had the opportunity to explore Europe with his own vehicle. In this case, the first owner chose the so-called "EU Delivery" and booked additional extensive equipment, such as; power windows and air conditioning.

From the US title we can see that the car was registered in Miami, Florida (USA) in 1971 and was sold to a Mr. Richter in 2004 for 55,000 dollars. He re-imported the car, which was already painted in ivory at that time, back to Germany. After 5 years, the American paintwork showed to be in a somewhat worn condition, so that Mr. Richter decided to have it repainted. Again he chose the color ivory (DB620). It is not the delivery color of the vehicle but it still suits the car sensationally. At the same time, he had the soft top and the leather interior renewed.

In 2011, the company Kienle bought the car and sold it to Mr. Gossens the same year. Mr. Gossens commissioned Kienle to completely restore (nut to bolt) his newly acquired vehicle. After the restoration was completed, Mr. Gossens (who never registered the car to himself) realized he wanted a convertible with an electric top and sold the car to Mr. Pass through Kienle in 2012.

Mr. Pass drove the car for 9 years and enjoyed it to the fullest. He also continued the thorough documentation which was started by the previous owners. The last valuation report from 2017 rates the W111 with a grade of 1- and classifies the car at a replacement value of €435,000.00. In 2021, Mr. Pass sells the 3.5 liter convertible to the last owner, who is now parting with the vehicle due to time constraints.

The car is still in a first-class condition. Both technically and visually, the car is absolutely gorgeous and ready to go at any time.

History of the Series

Produced from September 1967 to October 1971 according to factory specifications, the 280 SE Cabriolet W111 is the successor to the W105 and W180. With only 1,390 units produced, it is a true exotic.

However, production of the series began as early as 1959 with the 220 (b), 220 S(b) and 220 SE (b) models and, from 1965, the 230 S. A new development was the 280 SE 3.5 power unit, which was fitted as standard from 1969 to 1971. This power unit reminded by its humming running noise of American top models. One should know that the USA was the main sales market for the big Mercedes-Benz models at that time.

A feature of the W111/112 models was the further developed crumple zone in the front and rear, a safety steering wheel with impact plate and wedge pin door locks, which prevented it from bursting open in the event of an accident.

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Cabriolet came standard with a 4-speed manual transmission, and those who added a little extra got the automatic transmission. The options of the steering wheel gearshift or the gearshift lever in the middle of the car remained the same.

In 1969 the new car price of a 280 SE Cabriolet without extras was 28.750,00 DM. 2,000.00 DM more than the coupe. Who wanted the automatic transmission, had to add another 1,440.00 DM. That there was no successor of the 4-seater cabriolet for a long time, the 280 SE cabriolets were first hand for a long time.

Today, this model is one of the most sought-after vintage Mercedes models and is rapidly increasing in value.

The vehicle is located in our showroom in Stuttgart-Plieningen, close to the airport/trade fair. A test drive and an inspection on the car lift are possible by arrangement.

The sale takes place on request with new inspection, service and TÜV. We also offer a wide range of accessories for your new dream car. If required, we can also deliver the vehicle to you in a closed trailer.
