The masterpeice made by the genius by Sir Alec Issigonis probably resulted in the most important car of the 20th century. With its transversely mounted engine and wheels placed
in each corner, a fundamental change in producing cars was introduced. Not only
was the Mini by BMC cheap, easy to drive, smart and very practical - the handling of the car was second to none.

At the launch of the Mini in 1959 John Cooper was regarded as one of the best constructors of formula and rally cars, and he immediately recognized the potential of the small well-handling Mini. The first Cooper equipped with a 997cc engine was launched in 1961 followed by the stronger Cooper “S” with 1071cc engines, later enlarged to 1275cc.

The Mini Cooper “S” soon became the preferred weapon of choice for some of the best rally drivers of that area. Drivers like Paddy Hopkirk, Timo Mäkinen and Rauna Aaltonen ensured
eternal fame for the car. 3 victories in Monte Carlo Rally speaks for itself. Actually the Cooper “S” also scored a 1-2-3 in the rally of 1966, however the French organizers disqualified the Cooper based upon a technicality concerning the front lights.

The most sought after Cooper “S” is our model with its external door hinges, sliding side windows and the rounded frontgrill.

This example was produced on 6 November 1964 at the Longbridge factory (in Cooper “S” form Austin as wellas Morris versions were produced here) as documented by the Heritage Certificate of the car. It was delivered to BMC Sweden and registered with Ms. Marie-Louise Samnerud in Stockholm shortly before Christmas 1964. There is a huge amount of documentation for the car, from which it appears that as early as in 1969 it started it’s parralle life in competition, alongside everday normal duties. In 1990 the car was acquired by the well-known Swedish rally driver P-O Flogner. He prepared the car for rally and time trials, equal in trim as the car in which Timo Makinen participated in the “Alpine Rally” of 1965. During the following years the car was used occasionally and finally won the Swedish National Historic Championship 2004-06. A nice little video of the car in action can be found on Youtube (search for: TV Svängen 1993 del 2 & Sjöbosvängen 1994 and go to 5,5 min). In 2007 the car was acquired by a Danish Mini enthusiast and collector. Next to being the jewel of his collection, the car occasionally enters events such as “Stjerneløbet” and Copenhagen Historic Grand prix. Part of the extensive documentation for the car is both Danish as well as Swedish HTP.

The engine is refurbished and rebuild to 1293cc, balanced and fitted with a modified top-end. It has a high compression ratio of 12.1:1, modified cam as well as AP pistons. It pulls evenly and eagerly up to 7500 r/m. We don’t know the exact maximum power of the engine, but our guess would be north of 125bhp. Matched to a straight cut close-ratio transmission with LSD, the car is very quick and well performing.

We deliver the car ready for new adventures – Rally Monte Carlo here we come……
