HISTORY
This Volvo PV 544 (better known as the ‘Katterug’) is a Type F sports version and therefore one of the last models produced. In 1965, this iconic car – a long-term evolution of the PV 444 introduced in 1944 – was manufactured and delivered new in Sweden. In 1993, it was imported from Sweden (registered with a Dutch number plate in 1996) by Nordicar in Heerhugowaard. The car came into the possession of a Volvo enthusiast in the same year, who has owned it ever since. That is now 30 years! The registration certificate from 1996 is included with the car. Following the restoration of a Volvo Amazon, it was time in 2015 to tackle this PV 544, although the car was already in good running order and in solid condition. The Volvo was subsequently dismantled and restored, resulting in a technically excellent and visually unique car. This restoration was a great pleasure and a rewarding hobby, but due to age and physical limitations, a new, enthusiastic owner can now enjoy the Volvo. Classic looks with modern sportiness and comfort!
EXTERIOR
Choosing the colour proved a challenge, as the original 1965 Volvo red (colour code 46) was not the preferred option. After a long search, a sparkling pearlescent metallic red from Alfa Romeo was chosen: ‘Rosso Competizione’. The colour combines beautifully with dark anthracite-painted alloy wheels, creating a unique and sporty appearance. The restoration was carried out with the principle of reusing parts wherever possible. Surprisingly, much of the car was in good condition, meaning many original elements, such as the chrome trim, are still present. The paintwork, windows and lighting are in good condition. The gaps between panels fit together neatly, indicating a damage-free history. A tow bar has been fitted at the rear. The exterior of the Volvo PV 544 is characterised by its timeless, rounded shapes and distinctive lines. The car has a robust yet charming appearance with its bulging mudguards, narrow grille and striking front end. The compact build and classic proportions give the PV 544 a sporty and distinctive character. The car comes with spare hubcaps and the original trim strips.
INTERIOR
The interior also received a great deal of attention during the restoration. The original plastic dashboard has been upholstered in black calfskin. The front seats have been replaced with mechanically adjustable black leather seats from a BMW 3 Series. The interior is further finished in black leather with subtle red accents. The centre console has been redesigned and finished in leather, including an armrest and cup holders. The result is a unique and luxurious interior. The floor is finished with rubber tiles (to prevent moisture) beneath the carpet. With the rear seats in place, there are a total of 4 seats. The headlining is also in good condition. The boot accommodates the spare wheel.
TECHNICAL
During the restoration, all layers of bitumen were removed to check for hidden rust. All affected areas were carefully worked out and fitted with new body panels. Fortunately, the bodywork proved to be exceptionally sturdy. After a year of intensive scraping and cleaning, the axles were addressed, parts replaced and the vehicle rebuilt. The bare B18 engine block was fully overhauled at Peters Motorenrevisie in Epse. Then came the best part of the restoration: the reassembly. Every single screw was loosened and the Katterug’s known weak points were improved. Among other things, the rear shock absorber housings were modified, a stainless steel heat shield was fitted between the stainless steel exhaust and the underbody panel, and all mudguards were fitted with aluminium inner liners. The underside has been thoroughly treated and fitted with several protective layers, including a stone-chip coating. The grey RAL finish ensures that any damage remains clearly visible and easy to check.
Technical specifications:
• New shock absorbers all round
• Four new springs (rear reinforced)
• New rear tyres
• All rubber bumpers replaced
• Rear axle fitted with new bearings
• Front axle converted to disc brakes
• Chassis beams treated internally
• Extra protection against dirt and splash water
The reconditioned B18 engine has been fitted with new cylinders, pistons and bearings, as well as a modified cylinder head with hardened valves and seats. The SU carburettors have been professionally tuned and a new radiator has been fitted. Since the restoration, the car has covered approximately 1,500 km without any oil consumption.
GENERAL
The Volvo PV series was produced by Volvo from 1947 to 1965 and comprises the Volvo PV444 and Volvo PV544 models. The car was designed during the Second World War as a compact and economical solution for the future. The PV models quickly gained a reputation as strong and robust cars. Although the design was considered somewhat outdated from an early stage, its reliability proved to be a major advantage. Moreover, the PV achieved remarkable successes in motor racing, both in the United States and internationally. A highlight was the victory of a second-hand Volvo PV544 in the 1965 Safari Rally, which underlined the model’s reliability and performance. Production of the PV series ended in October 1965. Although some examples were still sold and registered in 1966, 1965 is officially considered the final model year. To this day, the PV544s remain beloved classics due to their character, simplicity and indestructible reputation.
