The Puch 230 GE was the backbone of the Swiss Army when it came to robust off-road mobility. Between 1983 and 1996, around 4,600 examples of the off-roader manufactured by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz were delivered – a vehicle based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, but specially adapted to the requirements of the Swiss military.
Under the bonnet was the proven 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (M102), producing 125 hp and coupled to an automatic transmission and selectable four-wheel drive. Its strengths lay less in outright speed than in reliability: gradients, gravel, snow or mud – the Puch 230 GE tackled them all with stoic composure. Typical features of the military specification included the spartan equipment, olive-green paintwork, canvas top and simple, rugged engineering. Whether used as a troop carrier, radio vehicle or ambulance variant, the concept was designed for durability and ease of maintenance.
After decades of service, many of these vehicles were retired and found their way into civilian hands, where they are now appreciated as authentic classics with genuine utility. The Puch 230 GE has since become an iconic example of Austrian-Swiss engineering – proof that functionality, durability and off-road capability lose none of their appeal even after 40 years.
This 230 GE was registered in Germany in 2023. Between its retirement from the Swiss Army and its return to the road, the current owner extensively customised the vehicle: an Alcantara interior with stitching matched to the exterior colour, not only in the cockpit but also throughout the passenger compartment. The suspension was raised, while larger wheels with substantially more imposing tyres were fitted. The cockpit was also upgraded with an infotainment system.
The result is a highly individual Puch G that, quite unlike during its days in military camouflage, is now guaranteed to turn heads wherever it goes.
