• Very well known in racing circles
• Considerable history

The 1970 Plymouth GTX stands as one of the most iconic American muscle cars of its era, blending aggressive styling with serious performance. Built on the Belvedere platform, the GTX was often referred to as the “gentleman's muscle car” due to its upscale touches combined with raw power. Under the hood, the standard engine was a 440 cubic-inch V8 delivering strong torque and straight-line speed, while the legendary 426 HEMI V8 was available as an option for those seeking maximum performance. With bold design elements like a prominent grille, dual hood scoops, and clean body lines, the 1970 GTX had a commanding presence on the road. Inside, it offered a more refined interior compared to many competitors, featuring high-back bucket seats and woodgrain accents. This balance of comfort and performance made the GTX appealing to drivers who wanted both luxury and muscle.

Originally imported to the UK in 1988 by George Chiles, this exceptional 1970 Plymouth GTX first caught the attention of Dave Billadeau in 1991, at which time it was already a formidable performer, recording 12.8-second quarter-mile times without the aid of nitrous oxide. Dave acquired the car in 1993, then finished in a striking green paint scheme and began a long-term journey of development and stewardship.

Following the 2006 racing season, the GTX underwent a comprehensive restoration. The body was returned to its original factory specification as it left the line in August 1969, refinished in correct Alpine White (EW1) and complemented by the reinstatement of its vinyl roof. The period-correct gold interior was also restored, completing an authentic and highly desirable factory appearance.

At this stage, the car was powered by an all-aluminium 572 cubic inch HEMI engine producing in excess of 800 horsepower. Performance enhancements included a Dana 60 rear axle with CalTracs and monoleaf springs, paired with a 727 transmission and 9.5-inch torque converter. In this formidable configuration, the GTX achieved a best elapsed time of 9.80 seconds at 139 mph at the 2007 Open Sports Nationals.

In 2012, the car was retired from competition and carefully returned to a near factory-original specification. The race-prepared drivetrain was replaced with a numbers-matching 440 Six Pack engine fitted with cast manifolds, producing 417 horsepower and 504 lb-ft of torque. The roll cage was removed, the fuel system reverted to standard, and a steel bonnet with Air Grabber scoop was reinstated and six pack carbs were installed.

Today, this Plymouth GTX represents a rare and compelling blend of authentic muscle car heritage and documented competition history, offering collectors the best of both worlds: factory-correct presentation and proven high-performance pedigree with lots of history and very well known American muscle car.
