When the Mercedes-Benz R230 was first presented to the public as the Safety Car for the 2001 Formula One Grand Prix at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany, the message was immediately clear. This generation of the SL surpassed its predecessor, the R129, in every respect and entered the realm of true supercars. This is especially true for the 500-horsepower SL 600. Powered by a 5,513 cc twin-turbocharged V12 engine, this roadster accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Even by 2026 standards, these are impressive figures.
What remains truly astonishing, however, especially for a car now 22 years old is its immense torque. Astronomical when the V12 was introduced and still highly impressive today: no less than 800 Nm is available from just 1,800 rpm. Those are figures that would make even many electric cars envious. The sound produced by the V12 is magnificent—powerful and commanding, yet never excessive or vulgar.
This SL is very much a discreet powerhouse, a true wolf in sheep’s clothing if you will. No AMG styling package, elegant yet understated wheels, dual exhaust finishers at the rear, and a calm, sophisticated colour combination. It goes without saying that an SL with this powertrain offers tremendous refinement and effortless performance. Yet, if desired, this V12 remains the undisputed king of in-gear acceleration even in 2026. For the true connoisseur, this was and still is the SL to have within the R230 range.
A major innovation for the SL series was the introduction of the Vario-Roof, a system already familiar from the SLK. At the touch of a button, the steel roof folds away completely automatically, transforming the elegant coupé into a beautiful roadster. The sumptuous anthracite leather interior is enhanced by beautifully contrasting wood trim on the centre console, gear selector, steering wheel, and door panels. Naturally, as the flagship SL 600, this model comes equipped with every luxury feature imaginable. The seats offer extensive adjustment options as well as heating and ventilation functions, while the navigation, audio, and climate-control systems represent the most advanced and exclusive technology available at the time.
This Mercedes-Benz was originally delivered new in Japan in September 2004 and has been registered in the Netherlands since September 2020. With an indicated mileage of just 56,306 km, this V12 is ready to provide many more years of driving pleasure. Top up or top down, cruising or driving spiritedly, purposefully travelling or leisurely grand touring. The choice is entirely yours.
