Description

Key Facts

  • One of just 459 Maserati 228s built worldwide
  • Swedish‑market specification with full 250 bhp despite catalytic converter
  • Historic vehicle (H‑registration)
  • TÜV & emissions inspection valid until April 2027
(passed without any objections at 98,000 km)
  • Condition assessed as Grade 2 by Classic Data
  • Comprehensive history file and invoices present

Overview

The Maserati 228 represents the most refined and luxurious evolution of the Biturbo lineage. Conceived as an upmarket grand touring coupé, it is longer, wider and significantly more exclusive than the standard Biturbo models. When new in 1988, it carried a list price of DM 115,000, firmly placing it in the premium GT segment.

With a factory‑quoted 0–100 km/h time of 5.2 seconds, the 228 delivers effortless performance combined with long‑distance comfort — exactly as intended.

Rarity is a defining feature: only 459 examples were produced, some of which were never delivered. Opportunities to acquire a well‑sorted example such as this are few and far between.

Usage & Care

The car has been driven regularly and used for extended touring, which suits its character perfectly. It was never laid up unnecessarily and was always stored during winter in a warm, dry facility. Maintenance and servicing have been carried out consistently and with care.

  • TÜV / emissions inspection passed without any objections at 98,000 km
  • Inspection valid until April 2027
  • TÜV classic vehicle appraisal (§23 StVZO) on file

Provenance

  • First registered in Sweden
  • Previously owned by a respected Swedish collector
  • Returned to active road use in 2022 following extensive mechanical renewal

A notable point for UK‑based enthusiasts: Swedish‑market cars received revised engine management to offset catalytic‑converter losses, meaning this example retains the full 250 bhp, compared with 224 bhp on most other catalytic‑equipped cars.

Engine & Mechanical Work (2022)

The engine was subject to a comprehensive overhaul, including renewal of:

  • Timing belt and auxiliary drive belts
  • Camshafts
  • Cooling and vacuum hoses
  • Braking system (all round)
  • Water pump
  • Radiator
  • Complete clutch

Approx. €11,000 invested (invoices included).
A Patriot alarm system was installed at the same time.

Further Recent Investment (approx. €12,000)

  • Front suspension travel limiters and front wishbones
  • Complete rear axle overhaul including cavity protection
    (Mike Sanders corrosion treatment)
  • Air‑conditioning converted to R134a
  • Four‑wheel alignment
  • Rear brakes renewed
  • Power‑assisted steering pump and steering box overhauled
  • New battery
  • New spark plugs and air filter
  • New tyres throughout: Toyo Proxes TR1
(Toyo is an OEM supplier to Porsche)
  • Upgrade to Philips RacingVision GT200 H4 bulbs (+200% output)

Due to an error during the initial import inspection, correct tyre sizes were subsequently officially certified and approved.

Bodywork & Interior

  • New original windscreen installed
  • Bonnet professionally stripped, treated and repainted
  • Roof and boot lid refinished for uniform paint depth and colour
  • Full professional interior and exterior detailing

Exterior: Rifle Grey Metallic – a deep green tone reminiscent of British Racing Green
Interior: Beige “glove leather”, exceptionally well preserved
Audio: Period‑correct Blaupunkt London radio/CD with electric aerial

The sale is health‑related only; otherwise, this rare car would not be offered.
