Of all the sports cars sold in America in the 1960s, the Ford Mustang was perhaps the best known. Ford designer John Najjar was a keen enthusiast of the Mustang bombers used during the Second World War and decided to name his latest creation after them. The first series of the Mustang was built between 1964 and 1973; the early models from the 1960s in particular are highly prized by collectors. What made the Mustang popular were its sporty looks and its relatively low price of $2,368. This meant that many Americans could afford a sports car, which gave sales figures a massive boost. Various body styles were available: a convertible, a coupé and a sporty fastback. But, of course, for some customers it couldn’t be sporty enough. And so Carol Shelby was called in to help. He applied his expertise to the Mustang: less weight and more power were his guiding principles. Heavy parts of the car were replaced with lighter fibreglass components. The rear seats were removed and a larger engine fitted, coupled with a manual four-speed gearbox. The focus was on a sporty appearance and handling, not on a wide range of features or luxury trim.

The Ford Mustang we are pleased to offer is a 1965 Fastback and therefore a very early model. The last owner kept the car for 20 years and transformed it into a ‘GT350’. The car has been completely overhauled, not only visually but, above all, technically. Under the bonnet lies the famous ‘K-code’ 289 V8 with nearly 300 pk. The ignition system features dual points, and the valve covers are from an original GT350 racing car. The engine is mated to a four-speed Toploader gearbox. The fuel tank and filler neck are exactly as they should be on a GT, and even the rev counter and the radio cover are original Shelby parts. The car comes with a folder of photos documenting the restoration, which show that the original floor panels are still in place. The interior is immaculate and original; the rear seat is covered by a tarpaulin, just as in the original GT.

This Mustang is a true muscle car and deserves to be seen – and, above all, heard. We invite you to come and see it for yourself!
