The 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback is without question one of the most iconic American sports cars ever built, but some versions are even more special than others. This Mustang is an original factory-built GT K-code High Performance Fastback — a model that is today considered one of the most desirable and collectible Mustangs of the 1960s.
Under the hood sits the original 289 High Performance V8, better known as the legendary “HiPo” engine. Ford developed this special engine for drivers who wanted far more than a standard Mustang. The K-code engine received many unique factory upgrades including stronger internal components, a special counterweighted crankshaft, larger valves, a more aggressive camshaft and a higher rev limit. Combined with the original Autolite 4100 600CFM carburetor, this Mustang delivers an incredible sound and a truly exciting driving experience.
What makes this Mustang even more special is the fact that all of the original HiPo-specific components are still present. Details such as the large diameter alternator, heavy-duty harmonic balancer, high-flow exhaust manifolds, original dual-point ignition system and the correct high-revving 4-blade fan with factory fan shroud are all still in place. The kind of details true Mustang enthusiasts immediately recognize and appreciate.
Many years ago we found this Mustang in the USA as a long-forgotten project car. It was later sold to the Netherlands where the previous owner carried out a complete nut-and-bolt restoration with incredible attention to detail and originality. Virtually every single component has been restored or rebuilt exactly the way Ford intended.
The result is simply stunning.
Finished in its original Wimbledon White color, the paintwork is of exceptional quality — arguably even better than when these cars left the factory in 1966. The body is beautifully straight with excellent panel alignment and outstanding overall finish quality. Combined with the beautiful Pony Deluxe interior, this Mustang has the timeless appearance that made the Fastback models world famous.
Mechanically, this K-code performs exactly as a true High Performance Mustang should. The original HiPo engine runs beautifully and delivers the raw, sporty character these cars became famous for. Factory-equipped with the heavy-duty 9-inch rear axle and rare Kelsey-Hayes 4-piston disc brakes, this Mustang was built for serious performance.
Only a limited number of Fastbacks were produced with the rare K-code High Performance engine in 1966. Over the years many cars lost their original HiPo drivetrains, making authentic and correctly restored examples extremely hard to find today.
This Mustang combines everything a top-level collector car should offer: rarity, history, performance and exceptional quality. A true “show and shine” Mustang that also deserves to be driven and enjoyed.
A collector-grade Fastback of a quality level that is nearly impossible to find today — even in the USA.
