Description

A Classic with Edge – the 1987 Ferrari 328 GTS Targa

It took Commendatore Enzo Ferrari a long time to bid farewell to the front-engine concept. As late as the end of the 1960s, he launched the front-engined Daytona, which attempted a modern radicalism with its headlights set behind Plexiglas. It was not until the 1975 Paris Motor Show that Pininfarina’s chief designer, Leonardo Fioravanti, unveiled the Ferrari of the future: the 308 GTB. A mid-engined sports car in wedge form – both elements were state of the art for a sports car at the time, just like the pop-up headlights. The 308 became Ferrari’s brand icon. The fact that it was driven by Tom Selleck in the hugely popular TV series Magnum from 1979 certainly helped.

After ten years, Ferrari introduced its successor, the 328 – essentially a well-executed facelift. Externally, the most striking change is the body-coloured bumpers. Even more significant, however, are the updates to the mid-mounted V8: displacement increases – hence the model designation 328 – from 3.0 to 3.2 litres. Thanks to newly shaped pistons, compression is raised, and ignition improved via a more advanced Magneti Marelli system. As a result, the fuel-injected engine produces markedly more power than its predecessor. While the 308/328 series is generally regarded as reliable and practical, the 328’s durability is considered even better.

Hardly any 308 or 328 was ordered in white, which already makes our auction car something of a rarity. The exterior colour contrasts beautifully with the red leather interior – especially, of course, with the Targa roof removed. As a Swiss-market version, this 328 is equipped with a catalytic converter. Although this slightly reduces power, the difference is unlikely to be noticeable given that it still delivers a healthy 255 bhp.

This 328 was delivered new in Gisikon and has been owned by a lady since 1997. It has covered just under 67,000 km and will undergo its next veteran inspection in November 2025. It will receive a major service and a timing-belt replacement; minor engine issues will also be rectified and the thermostat replaced. A series of additional invoices documents the consistently careful servicing of this Ferrari, which, with its transversely mounted V8, is the last of its kind. As a mature product of the late 1980s, it is likely to remain desirable for generations to come.
